Entrepreneur magazine has been profiling successful businesspeople for more than 25 years, and its parent company started Entrepreneur Press in 1998 to publish books that "inspire and inform readers." Its latest offering is a celebration of entrepreneurship that tries to inspire by example. It is also a trove of information that will satisfy the curious. Wawro is an advertising copywriter; he briefly portrays some 90 "men and women who, through talent, drive, ingenuity and desire . . . shaped the past 100 years." It is a fascinating assortment offered in alphabetical order, though Wawro never explains how he selected his roster. Some of the names may not be readily familiar, but their companies and products are. Thus we have Enid Bissett (Maidenform bra), Jean Nidetch (Weight Watchers), and Charles Lazarus (Toys R Us) rubbing shoulders with Milton Hershey, Bill Gates, and Oprah Winfrey. Most entries also include a photograph, a factoid or two, and a quote from the subject. This book might also appeal to students looking for research topics, but Wawro never identifies or lists his sources. David Rouse

BUSINESSES'S GREAT MAVERICKS

What do a bunch of computer geeks, housewives, washer woman, book retailer and others have in common? They and the rest of the group profiled in this anthology are the movers and shakers who changed how we do business and developed new industries that will shape the future.
Radicals & Visionairies gives you a brief look into the lives of seventy entreprenuers who changed the face of American business. Some of them have become house hold names (Walt Disney,Clarence Birdseye, Henry Ford) while others may not be as well known but their achievements live on. The individuals examined represent a diverse group of people coming from every social, economic and ethnic class. A few could be called egocentric, free wheeling and downright crazy. All of them were able to overcome obstacles in their lives and bring to America a new and diverse economy.
Unlike other profiles which go from "rags to riches", Thaddeus Wawro focuses on what innovation or new invention that the person developed which had a great impact on business. You see that these mavericks refused to follow the conventional business pack and moved out on their own.
This book also deals with what makes success. Each person doesn't have a "set formula" which says this will lead you to success. All of those profiled came to success in a different way. Their stories are enjoyable, informative and inspirational. These radicals should jump start you in thinking about entering the entrepreneur path.

70 Revolutionaries

This is an anthology of 70 micro-biographies, each of which includes some insightful comments and occasionally a little-known fact or two about the subject. Many of the selections are predictable: Michael Dell, Henry Ford, Bill Gates, William Hewlett & David Packard, Ray Kroc, Steve Jobs, Akio Morita, Ted Turner, Sam Walton, and Thomas Watson Jr. What surprised and pleased me is that Wawro also discusses several other "radicals & visionaries" which I did not expect to be included: Desi Arnaz & Lucille Ball, Clarence Birdseye, Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, Berry Gordy, Hugh Hefner, Jim Henson, John Johnson, George Lucas, David Ogilvy, Ron Popeil, Martha Stewart, and Oprah Winfrey.
This book is great fun to read...as well as informative. Wawro does indeed cover a wide as well as diverse range of entrepreneurs who helped to revolutionize the 20th century. My only complaint is the Wawro, who obviously completed a great deal of research inorder to write this book, did not include an annotated bibliography for readers who wish to learn more about the 70 subjects discussed. Perhaps it was impractical to do so. This is nonetheless a commendable achievement which I recommend highly.

Best Arduino Camera Book Reference

This is exactly the kind of information needed to manage the engineering complexity of connecting a highly controllable camera to your Arduino card and be successful in taking pictures. This book opens up the world of inexpensive digital video recording to the average experimenter. Be warned, the book is full of technical detail and circuit requirements in order for this combination of devices to work. So be prepared for a tour de force in getting the first prototype to work on your bench. The author does a top notch job of delivering the right information to the experimenter to manage this complex subject.

The book covers the pinouts and features of this particular camera( SD memory included ). It covers the nature of the camera's conversion of visual light into digital data and the effects of contrast selection and internal filter use. There are a number of background pdf files to support the subject listed on the internet and and extensive appendix to support experimental variations that the reader would like to explore.

There are a few issues that are not discussed in the book that the reader should know about. First, he specific camera model discussed in the book is not generally available and the OV7670 FIFO model must be specifically ordered. Otherwise, you may get the wrong device to work with the book's information even if the pinout is the same. I found 13 different cameras not of this type on the first two pages of Amazon using a search for "Arduino camera". The second issue is pin connectivity. The camera module has 18 pins and an Arduino UNO only has 10 digital and a few power pins for use. So, an UNO or Leonardo will not work for all possible combinations. A Mega or DUE should be intended in the mind of the experimenter. The third issue is performance. The UNO and Leonardo have a 16 MHz clock witch is too slow for camera use unless the camera has the integrated FIFO buffer. Even so, these small Arduinos have very little memory and the program size from the book can overwhelm the limited memory available. That is why I am doing all of my Arduino camera prototyping on a DUE. And extra cycles will be needed to interact remotely with an Arduino camera device which once again supports the need for the 85 MHz clock of the DUE. Good experimenting.

I needed to rent this for my sister's class and found this was the PSYCH 101 book. She told me it got the job done, and the book overall helped with her studies. She returned it, and the process was very simple. Amazon gives you a label, and you just ship it back in the box you got it in.

A book so good it may even be great. A scholastic achievement of epic scope and untold scale. Wow... just wow.

So very full of words and punctuation and believe me there are periods and commas everywhere but most paragraphs start with a weird dent in them. They broke the piggy bank on page numbers, each is different.The pictures use color but none of them are scratch and sniff. I don't mean to spoil the end but it turns out that "it's your parents fault". I wish I could have filled the night sky with all the stars I would like to give this book, five seems so inappropriate.

This is an excellent book for those interested in laying the foundation toward the understanding of fluids and acid/base. This is an exceptionally intricate topic but this book really does a great job in getting you started. I think the target audience is ideally the 3rd year medical student. However, it is never too late to read this book and as a resident I go back to it on occasion to help me to see the greater picture.
This book is very interesting and can be read with understanding in a weekend. However, I must say this is one of those books that should be read many times over. Every time I pick it up I learn something new...however, that is part of the beauty of acid/base and electrolytes in general.

I believe that electrolytes are the key to much of medicine. However, most students/residents/attendings dismiss electrolytes as if they represent merely yesterday's news. As stated - I think this book is really a very good STARTER-book. The electrolytes fever may take place here. Should you catch the fever I have two more books that I highly recommend.

Pick up Mitch Halperin's Fluid, Electrolyte, and Acid-Base Physiology. This book is full of clinical examples and uses a practical integrative physiology approach to learning. Well worth any amount of money that you put down.

Burton Rose's Clinical Physiology of Acid-Base and Electrolyte Disorders is a beautiful text as well. This is the "Up-to-Date" guy that many residents/physicians use while on-call. Heck, most physicians that use the service have read his hyponatremia sections in Up-to-Date. Well, his book will NOT disappoint.

A MUST for any med student! Even the attending nephrologists use it!!

This book is great! Its small size keeps it from being intimidating, and it is short enough that you can cram two nights before the exam. (I did!) In our classes, the attending nephrologists swore by this book. They use it on their floors to teach their nephrology fellows and residents about these often-misunderstood topics. It clearly answers most of your questions about how to keep acids and bases straight as well as the guidelines for hypokalemia, hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, and hypernatremia. For a smaller book, it packs a big punch!

Ridiculously Amazing

First - to comment on the "negative reviews":

1 - Yes, you need to know some renal physio to read this book, this is a book that is highly recommended for Medical Students, not for patient education.

2 - Right - this book is not intended to teach Renal physio -- read the title of this book. Dont look for explanations on GFR and the such in here -- this book was not made for this.

Ok - now my review:

This book will help you in your clinical studies tremendously -- it helped me while taking internal medicine (helps you finally learn which patients need which kinds of fluids with which supplementations, and at what rate to give it, etc.), tx of DKA is prevalent in my hospital and it helped with that too. It helped me in Critical Care -- where accurate reading of ABGs is mandatory, hyponatremia/pseudohyponatremia is super common, and other electrolyte disturbances need to be evaluated. Even helped me in GI! I haven't taken Nephro yet -- but I am sure it will help me there too.

This book is concise, logical, and clear. It makes tough topics easy to understand, but does not oversimplify. Topics that are super high yield for clinical practice and step 2 are explained perfectly. Perfect for med students. I think it will be too simplistic for residents -- who I think already know this stuff cold. This book is great and I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Adrian is a prolific researcher, writer and presenter, and is currently editor of SAGE's HSS journal Tourist Studies. He has written numerous articles for a range of journals, from Journal of Sociology and Body and Society to International Review for the Sociology of Sport and Environment and Planning D. He has written three previous book for SAGE: Tourism: An Introduction (2003), Nature and Social Theory (2002) and Animals and Modern Culture (1999).

He also presents a television show called The Collectors (ABC, Australia).

Excellent, Thoughtful Overview of Human-Animal Interface in Industrial Societies

I'm astonished by both the depth and the breadth of this sophisticated examination of a range of human-animal relationships in modern Western society. Unlike the previous reviewer, I have read it and intend to use it in a college course I am developing. I find it especially helpfully in providing an overview of broad topics, such as the historical shift from small family farms to massive agribusinesses, a shift that has produced a factory farming system that is truly, egregiously inhumane to so-called "food animals" such as cows and pigs. The beauty of the chapter is that it discusses a variety of such animals, so the breadth is really much appreciated by those of us who need a sort of thumnail of the shape of modern agribusiness. At the same time that he provides a useful overview of historically situated and changing relationships, Franklin also makes some theoretical contributions to this now-burgeoning, multidisciplinary field. For example, in his chapter on pets, he argues that in the modern capitalist context, pets address our pervasive, if under-discussed, sense of "ontological insecurity." We've lost the kin networks and communities of yesteryear and cats and dogs help to fill in the social (and perhaps existential?) gaps that yawn before us in modern life. There are now so many scholarly books about the human-animal interface out there these days, but Franklin was way ahead of his time with this accessible and thoughtful 1999 publication. As to the cost, about which the previous reviewer complained: yes, it's a real bummer, what academic books cost these days. But let us give credit where it is due, especially to hard-working scholars who are not making money on such under-appreciated publications.
