It's rare to come across a book that is so wise, practical, and simple! What Dr. Seymour Boorstein offers here is a deep insight into the nature of conflict in interpersonal relationship. His method is straight to the point in revealing the root of our fear, tension, and antagonism - and then showing us how to liberate ourselves gently and easily.

About the Author
Dr. Ron Larson is a professor of mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught since 1970. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado and is considered the pioneer of using multimedia to enhance the learning of mathematics, having authored over 30 software titles since 1990. Dr. Larson conducts numerous seminars and in-service workshops for math educators around the country about using computer technology as an instructional tool and motivational aid. He is the recipient of the 2013 Text and Academic Authors Association Award for CALCULUS, the 2012 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: AN APPLIED APPROACH, the 2011 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for PRECALCULUS: REAL MATHEMATICS, REAL PEOPLE, and the 1996 Text and Academic Authors Association TEXTY Award for INTERACTIVE CALCULUS (a complete text on CD-ROM that was the first mainstream college textbook to be offered on the Internet). Dr. Larson authors numerous textbooks including the best-selling Calculus series published by Cengage Learning.

High School Calculus Teacher's Opinion

I teach High School AP Calculus (AB), and we just started using this book. Our school has used two different Calculus books in the past (Bittinger, and Hughes-Hallett), and when I took Calculus in college we used the Stewart book. Out of these books that I have experience with, I think Calculus of a Single Variable by Ron Larson (9th ed.) is the best by far.

The order and manner in which the material is presented is outstanding. The problems at the end of each section are well thought out and numerous. As a teacher, there are plenty of problems for every section for me to either use in class or assign for homework. Other reviewers have complained that the problems do not contain a wide enough variety of complexity, but I have not found that to be the case. Perhaps if I was teaching a college calculus course I might run into that problem, but I have not encountered it in high school. For this first AP Calculus class, we only cover about the first 7-8 out of the 10 chapters in this book.

Additionally, the publishers provide a website where students can find all of the odd problems in the book worked out. It is nice to have odd answers in the back of the book, but it is even better if the students can see the steps of how to work a troubling problem online.

The only downside might be that at times the descriptions of new topics are a little too complicated for students to learn just from reading the text book (but that's what a teacher is for, right?!). I would not expect my students to be able to learn the topics on their own, and after we have covered material and worked exampled in class, the book becomes a lot more accessible for students to use as a review resource.

Overall, I really like this book. I would highly recommend it if you are thinking about switching text books- especially for AP Calculus!

This book has almost no differences from the 8th edition other than it is an older edition. Larson covers virtually all topics in calculus with multiple approaches preparing students for success whether it's on the AP exam or taking a course in Calculus. The authors focus on concepts and not just calculations enabling a deeper understanding of calculus. As a teacher, I appreciate this author's work.

Best Calculus Book Ever!

This is the most useful math book ever. It has a great section full of prerequisites: including their explanations, practice problems, and a cumulative review. It is very readable. The book starts each new chapter talking about an interesting application that you will get to study.

My order came in perfect condition and in a timely manner.

There are also extra resources that Ron Larson has put online for the book, which may prove helpful.

I haven't taken Calculus in four years, and I'm generally two sections ahead of the rest of the class when it comes to homework and understanding the material, because the examples are so well written, and the explanations work from the ground up. The definitions are also very simple to read, and many of the definitions have proofs in the back of the book.

Real life applications, capstone exercises, and problems from past Putnam Exams are contained in every chapter. These are great for testing the skills you acquire as you read through the book, and they reinforce the importance of Calculus.

They also have proven motivational at times. When a topic becomes abstract, it's easy to get bored to the point of apathy, but when you know that working through the topic is going to give you a really unique skill, it makes it all worth while.

There are formula cards that are perforated, so one may tear them out for an easy reference. Whether or not you decide to tear these formula cards out, they are immeasurable in value. They are concise, and will help you retain old information as new information comes along.

I have other Larson products, but this has to be my favorite Although, I must say, Ron Larson writes the best mathematics books that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Whether you're a student, a self-learner, or just need a reference for Calculus: this is, in my opinion, the best there is.

poor editing , of just plain wrong

Very good editing, for example page 22 introduces a 7C? , which should be a D7. Previously on the same page a D7 should have been a C. You can see this by looking at page 23 which has the correct chords. Same with page 24. The 7C shows up again, not previously shown.

I can't see how this book can help teach anyone the correct way to play a guitar

Do not order this book. The chords are wrong. I was going to return it but no time before Christmas so I corrected the chords. It baffles me how it found its way into print with so many mistakes!

Great for adults too

This says it is for kids but don't let that stop you from trying it as an adult just learning to play. The songs are cute and the instructions easy to follow and use. Beginners can be playing cute little songs quickly and give you skills that can be used to build on as you learn more chords.

Real Choice for Women

Catherine Hakim has written extensively on the subject of women and work. In her newest book she approaches this broad and complex subject by means of what she calls "preference theory". In a nutshell, this theory holds that contemporary western women are not at all united on these issues. Instead, they have a wide variety of preferences, preferences which must be taken into account by policy-makers.
Hakim offers four main tenets of preference theory: First, she says there have been five historical social changes which have led to a new scenario for women and their work choices: a. The 60's contraceptive revolution which gave women control over their fertility. b. The equal opportunities revolution, giving women equal access to the labour market. c. The rise of white-collar work, which tends to be more appealing to women. d. The creation of jobs for secondary work, where career is not the number one priority. e. The rising importance of preferences, choices and lifestyle options in affluent societies.
Second, women have many different preferences when it comes to work. In particular, there are three idealised preferences most women have: a. Home centered preferences (about 20% of women). b. Work centered preferences (about 20%). c. Adoptive (a combination of work and home) preferences (about 60%).
Third, these different preferences result in conflicts between different types of women. Men, on the other hand, are much more homogenous in their preferences, and thus have an advantage over the heterogeneous women. As a result, for many women, much conflict tends to arise because of these diverse preferences.
Fourth, the diversity of women's preferences means that public policy needs to be more diverse, catering to the different needs and desires of women, instead of trying to aim for just one approach.
Using this four-fold approach to questions of female work and lifestyle choices, she offers an incisive and thought-provoking analysis which will offer much to all sides of the debate. That is, both conservatives and feminists may need to readjust their agendas, in the light of this growing body of research.
One of the major conclusions of this research is that women clearly do not have one view on the issue of work and home, but many. Therefore, social policy should be flexible enough to meet the various preferences women in fact have. Policies should not seek to force women into some predetermined mould. Thus, if some women want to stay at home, and eschew the paid workplace, then government policies should recognise and accept those preferences. Indeed, research seems to indicate that, for various reasons, only a minority of women will want, and will reach, the top positions of power in the workforce.
Contrary to much feminist rhetoric, many women prefer either part-time work or no paid work at all. Not every women is chafing at the bits to flee the home for a life as a career woman. Certainly some are however. So government policy should cater for such divergence of interests and desires. And research makes it clear that this diversity of preferences will remain strong.
Thus if governments want to really honour the diversity of women in their choices, they should create policies which maximise choice, and forego coercive policies designed to create a pre-determined end. In this respect Hakim suggests that governments might adopt a kind of home-makers' allowance, available to all women. This should be available to all mothers for three years or more after each birth, irrespective of their employment record.
The importance of Hakim's thesis cannot be underestimated. The "one-size-fits-all" approach of many western governments (usually a feminist version of things) to questions of women and work tend to be restrictive and coercive. They just do not take into account the many real differences women have on the issue. Hakim's work shows us that women, like men, are not all of one piece, are not all cut from the same cloth. There is a wide-array of diversity and differences of opinion about the relationships between work, home, family, and other choices. Governments need to respect such diversity. This book is an important contribution to that end.

I really haven't had a chance to try many of the recipes, but the hints and information at the beginning of the book are extremely helpful. I have suggested it to others who have the same issues in swallowing and the subsequent potential to choke.

Not creative recipes, no nutritional info

The recipes are not very creative. Anyone who knows their way around a kitchen could come up with these. No nutritional information is provided, which is a big deal, because you really have to make calories count when you have trouble swallowing enough calories. Furthermore, because it was written in 2004, there are many more helpful foods available now that aren't included in the author's list, and helpful kitchen appliances--like a Bullet or Ninja blender.

Quality recipe book for special diet

Book is aesthetically pleasing - easy to keep out on the counter without feeling like you need to put it away. Recipes are easy to follow and contain simple ingredients so nothing seems "too hard" or expensive. The book goes far beyond just putting things in a blender. Very thoughtful approach to cooking for a specialized diet. Purchased for my mother-in-law who was placed on a liquid diet for medial reasons.
