Brilliant! spot-on analysis of how US political establishment molds public opinion to its own desires.

The key value of this book is the brilliant, spot-on framework of "activist democracy" vs. "spectator democracy" -- i.e., the notion, very well-supported, that while the US continues to present itself to its citizens and the outside world as "of the people, by the people", in truth the powers that be actively mold the mind of the public through propaganda, and give the public the illusion of control.

The public thinks they make their own decisions but in truth they are led to specific outcomes through well-established methods. The lengths to which this propaganda can take the population are practically without limit; typically it involves whipping up public support for wars (sometimes ridiculously unjust, like the overthrow of the Guatemalan government, leading to decades of civil war, for the sake of the United Fruit Company), for the benefit of the military-industrial complex.

It's a very quick read, and your understanding of how the US really works will become qualitatively better.

We See Media Control Everyday

"Media Control" is both brief and informative. The great thing about thi book is you can apply the concepts to instances in the past and present. The omniscient and omnipotent media. It dictates what most of us discuss at the dinner table, or over a cup of coffee or beer. The topics at hand are spoon-fed to us, and often our very own opinions are spoon-fed to us also. Often, we get a narrow pre-defined "choice" of 2 positions to take on these complicated topics. Often the two positions are oversimplified and more nuanced than actually opposing one another. These issues and circumstances are not that simple. But the media constructs and defines the parameters, simplifies and narrows them, and dishes them out to the public. This is the narrow field of play the mainstream media hands to us. We sheepishly accept it, often without being aware of it nor critically thinking about it. Our opinions on these chosen topics are often limited.

"Media Control" is applicable for the past, present, and future. The rules basically stay the same.

"Not every item of news should be published. Rather must those who control news policies endeavor to make every item of news serve a certain purpose."

Recent real-life instances of "Media Control" include Freedom Fries, pre-emptive attacks, war-mongering, PNAC, and the Neo-con fad that has infiltrated the US government via appointments, and influenced the US public in recent years: A high percentage of the American public according to polling data is not interested in attacking and overthrowing governments in foreign countries. Therefore, the public has to be influenced, excited, and engineered to endorse such endeavors. Fear is the best motivator to influence public opinion.

One example cited among many was the American public's perception and belief that Iraq would invade the United States. Iraqi armed forces landing on the shores of New Jersey or California? Imagine that. The Americans had to "fight them [the Sunnis) on their soil or they'd have to fight them on our soil." 7/10 American polled believe Iraq & Hussein were involved in 9-11 during the media onslaught that began with Judith Miller of the NY Times and the GWB administration. The Iraq conflict is near (perhaps) the end of US troop involvement, but it's a great illustraion of Media Control.

Another example from this book is former Panamanian ally, Manuel Noriega: a small time operator that dealt drugs in cooperation with the US the government, until he fell out of favor. Noriega was made larger than life. Made into a caricature of a dangerous thug. A threat. The USA removed him and restored power to the 8% white minority elite, having U.S. military officers in positions throughout the government.

Before this in the 1980s, there was the Emergency Threat to the United States: Latin American, Lessor Developed Countries, with ill-trained, and ill-equipped armies.

Ironically, the Creel Commission (CPI) is noted in "Media Control," and appriately so. The Creel Commission was a propaganda campaign to get the USA involved in WWI. It's widely considered by historians to be the center of the creation of the Public Relations (PR) industry.

The media is all-powerful. The thoughts most think, the tenets most believed in, and the words people say, are the words of others.

Propaganda is a form of communication that aims to influence attitudes toward a cause or position. It is primarily aimed to influence an audience.
Fundamentally, it should be a neutral term. However, it grew up with a negative connotation by association with the world wars.
In 1924, Adolf Hitler wrote that "propaganda is a truly terrible weapon in the hands of an expert". While the term propaganda might evoke oceaninc crowds of people rising arms and shouting "Heil Hitler" it is important to note that it was not invented by the Nazis.
The original latin word refers to the biological reproduction of flora and fauna (to propagate, things that must be disseminated), whereas the Papacy coined the phrase propaganda fide.
The Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of Faith is a Congregation of the Roman Curia for the Evangelization of Peoples (Congregation pro Gentium Evangelizatione). In 1622, Pope Gregory XV founded the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide (sacra congregatio christiano nomini propaganda) but it was Pope Urban VIII who made it an institution.

Excellent cookbook

This is a terrific vegetarian cookbook. It includes recipes from many different types of cuisines and everything we've tried in it has been delicious and generally pretty easy to fix. And even though it covers a lot of ground, the recipes are truly unique and taste amazing. We cook a lot of Indian food, yet there were recipes for things we weren't familiar with that anyone who loves Indian food would enjoy... try the lemon dal.

Having read many negative reviews before I started this book, I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it so much. I am glad I did not let them keep me from reading it. Even though the first 40% of the book is dedicated to getting the H/h together, it was interesting and the plot twists and turns for the last 60% kept me reading. I was very glad this h did not keep a juvenileish diary like the one in book 2 did. This h was a fully realized competent adult.
I do have to agree that the sex scenes are overdone and tend to go on and on. Surely they can do something besides "shatter" when they reach climax.
It did take me a minute to realize that these books cover the same time period so during the course of the book, some things that had happened in book 2 had not happened yet in book 3 caught me off guard and for a moment I thought someone had forgotten the plot but time advances and things get caught up.
Whoever proof read this book needs to go back and look at the extraneous commas.
I liked the H/h together and I am glad I read this book. I have already started the last one and am hoping I like it as well.

Very Strong Woman Heroine

THE BRAZEN BRIDE is the third book in the Black Cobra Quartet. The series is about four men who have discovered the identity of the English leader of a dangerous cult in India and are returning to England with proof. This book is about Logan Monteith who is almost killed by cultists and ends up washed up on the shores of Linnet Trevission's home. The two quickly -- very, very quickly -- end up in a sexual relationship while Logan has memory loss fire to his injuries. When he regains his memories, he is off to complete his mission.

This book was divided for me between the section before Logan regains his memory and after. The book did not work perfectly for me because of the differences in the tone and action. I liked both parts but they did not work in a cohesive manner. I did really like Linnet who is a unique, strong and independent woman. I wish we could have learned more about her and seen Linnet and Logan working through the issues there. On the positive side, I did love the opening of this book wick is one of my favorites because the reader is immediately put into the action of the story.

I think this book needs to be read by fans of Laurens who have read the Cynster and Bastion Club series because there are many appearances by characters from those books and I think that without that background the numerous character appearances will be bewildering.

I'd rate this one a 3.5.

Love the main characters, but the mystery was off

I generally like Ms. Laurens' books. She usually writes about two strong adults who need to find common ground, and there is nothing new here in that respect. I also usually enjoy the mystery subplots in her novels.

I did enjoy the characters in this story, very much, except for the villain(s). The villains and the mystery were kind of thinly drawn and a little bit (okay maybe a lot) implausible. So much felt contrived with this series (not just this book, all four books in the series). And there were plot holes in the mystery which usually doesn't happen in this author's books.

Overall if you like Ms. Laurens' books, you'll enjoy this one for the expected relationship and characteristics of the hero and heroine. The mystery is not up to her usual though.

First published in 1915, Old Calabria is one of the most comprehensive and exciting accounts of adventure travel in this century. Captivated by the cheerfully pagan quality of the mezzogiorno, as he understood it, Douglas plunged into Calabria, the southernmost and most backward part of Italy (a province that was still largely devoid of any form of modern amenity). He endured extremes of climate, scaled mountains, rode in rickety carriages driven by villainous coachmen, and traversed remote stretches of country where murderous groups of banditti were known to roam.

About the Author
Norman Douglas lived a long and scandalous life. Born in 1868, the son of a Scottish father and Austrian mother, he was a lifelong hedonist, and spent much of his time 'hopping it' across borders to avoid arrest. Douglas was at once the most irascible, intolerant and kindest of men. He was also a writer of near-genius. He died in 1952.

Misleading book description

This book is a masterpiece of English literature on Italy. However the book description on Amazon is misleading. It is not about Calabria but "Old Calabria." To the ancients the area between northern Apulia (Puglia) and Calabria, and of course Calabria itself, was Calabria. The first half of the book is mostly about the area which is called Tavoliere di Puglia, which is in current-day Puglia, and parts of Basilicata (the old Lucania). Only the second half deals with current-day Calabria.

Norman Douglas's knowledge and grasp of Southern Italy is unsurpassed. I also highly recommend "Siren Land." Add to these Goethe's "Italian Journey" and you will have gained the kind of insight that no contemporary, olive-tree hugging, marketing-conscious author can ever provide.

If you enjoy books by literary travellers, you will love this one. In it a humane sensibility reveals itself in clean, meticulous prose. This is not a book about Calabria but a book about Norman Douglas in Calabria, a much more interesting topic. Read Paul Fussell's excellent essay on Douglas, "Norman Douglas's Temporary Attachments" and you will understand. In Abroad: British Literary Traveling between the Wars

An Excellent Read

This was a brilliant book and thoroughly enjoyable. At first I got it to look into the nature of the Calabrian people but soon realized it was the story of one man's interpretation of his own travels through Southern Italy in areas that may at one time have been part of Calabria. Interestingly San Giuseppe di Cupertino was mentioned in the book but he is from Le Marche, far north of Calabria if old. Still a witty and sarcastic endeavor that was fun to read.
