Prepared me enough to get a 5 on the physics 2 ap exam, despite only taking ap physics 1. However, there are several errors in the book's practice problems. IMO, optics can be a little confusing with this book, but electricity, fluids, and magnetism are covered extremely well.

About the Author
Daniel Geery has been writing since the seventies, mostly while teaching elementary school. He is now an inventor with two patents, the Aquaglider (described herein) and the Hyperblimp, easily Googled. He interviewed Robert Redford and the late David Brower, Nobel Peace Prize Candidate and pioneer of the modern environmental movement. Geery has written countless letters to the editor on environmental topics, presented many speeches at environmental hearings, written a trail guide to the Wasatch Mountains, produced a self-help book, and wrote a “how-to” solar greenhouse book, along with articles for several outdoor magazines. He avidly studied and taught writing during his teaching career. Geery lived off-the-grid for fifteen years in an earth-sheltered, solar home that he designed and built. He now writes progressive political blogs and in 2012 ran for Federal Senator from Utah on the Justice Party ticket.

I laughed my *@$#** off

I enjoyed A Summer with Freeman immensely and laughed my ass off through nearly all of this book. It brought back lots of old, painful memories, some really good ones too, and made me thankful that my own life experience wasn't all that bad.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. I’m not talking about the French Revolution (I apologize to Dickens), but about puberty or that awkward age we all pass through to become an adult. Dan Geery, I’m sorry for your experience--if it is indeed your experience, but at least we can all laugh about it.

This story unfolds in the early 1960s. Our protagonist, Joey, has grown up ignorant and fearful--just like anyone in this country did in those days. It takes a new friend, “Freeman”, to snap him out of his “worse-than-death”, teenage dream state. This does not happen all at once, but after a summer-long series of enlightening, unpleasant (in a sort of crap down both legs sort of way), yet absolutely hilarious experiences.

Our new best friend and hero, Freeman, takes Joey on the roller coaster ride of his short little life. Courageous, or dangerously impulsive? Intelligent, or blissfully ignorant? Who knows? Freeman holds us fascinated like the proverbial cobra hypno-eyes. Joey needs Freeman. Why else would he tolerate the crazy situations he always ends up in. We all needed (or still need) someone like Freeman to yank us out of the ruts of our lives and introduce us into a much larger and liberating existence.

This is not exactly a nostalgic rite-of-passage story. Geery takes on bullies, sex, summer vacation, little brothers, big brothers, girls (did I mention sex?), the Catholic Church, painful ignorance (the male kind--did I mention girls?), toxic waste, suburban sprawl and other environmental concerns, FEAR and what happens to the body when FEAR just becomes too much to deal with.

A must read for young men facing the tweens.

Daniel Geery is one talented writer. He captures the perils and doubts facing young men coming of age.
Can't tell you how many times I was caught laughing out loud at parts of Freeman's simplification of life without guilt. I would love to see Joey continue his story as a baby boomer, trying to make sense of the propaganda fed to young and old alike by the media.

Thought I was a teenager again

I just finished reading "A Summer with Freeman." I could relate so well to this book. Puberty was hell. Thought I was the only one. Sex, shyness, fear, religious guilt, and boredom all wrapped up into a great read. Whether reading in bed or sitting on your deck at home, you'll have some great laughs. Mr Geery please write a sequel now that we are all old.

This edition stops at 1824, where's the rest of the story?

I really enjoyed getting into the head of a 19th lesbian with these diaries. Not just any woman could have endured or survived the vicissitudes of what life was like back then. It's a very interesting read on how she goes about her life, business, love, education, and her untimely death.

Another very inspiring part of the diary is when she visits the Ladies of Llangollen, 2 Irish lesbians who relocated to the north of Wales to escape their family and societies prejudice against their sexuality. Here's an interesting thing about that meeting, she's only able to meet one of them, the other sick. Anne realizes that these women are living the life she wants--outside of loneliness, in their own love for each other, in the context of community tolerance. She alludes to their lifestyle inspiring her in her own goals of living.

The diaries are filled with the day to day responsibilities of taking care of herself and family, while trying to live as a woman in society. Evidently Anne's butchness is very apparent, prompting insults from strangers at times claiming she's a man dressed as a woman. The details of these encounters with people, acquaintances and other closeted women is interesting from a sociological point of view.

The only other thing I wished this volume (2010) included, was the relationship with Ann Walker, which was absent of all mention. This relationship, I'm assuming, took place between 1825 to 1840; so essentially there is 15 years missing from the diaries. I'm not sure why these years are not included; from what I've gathered these years are Anne's most rewarding years in terms of relationship and commercial enterprise and development of the Shibden estate along with Miss Walker's property in coal mining. There's a very good documentary by Sue Perkins called: Revealing Anne Lister, which details some of that story, and the film "The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister" tells a little of this story as well. This last relationship with Ann Walker is a sort of happy ending for Anne until their travels abroad begin in 1839, only to end tragically with Anne's death.

So the only big disappointment is the missing entries from these years. I wanted to know how that relationship with Miss Walker evolved with both of them keeping house in the end as partners. I almost think that there should be another volume, part 2 revealing the life of these years--I'll buy it in a New York minute when it comes out!

Bottom line of these diaries is that they are a treasure, since there is not much documentation of a lesbian life of this era with such detail until these were published completely very recently (1992?). They represent a very important part of invisible lesbian history--now visible--and should be celebrated and read.

wonderful content, but covers only 1816-1825

This book provides excerpts from Lister's remarkable diary for the period of 1816-1825 only. It is a snapshot of a specific period and doesn't attempt to act as a biography. The title of the book might have included these dates to help readers know what they're getting.

The book is very badly indexed; a casual perusal turned up 3 different mistakes, along with obvious misspellings. It is also very brief.

Also, for the reader who jumps around, you can't find out what year you're in without paging back to the beginning of the chapter. You have to go back one page at a time, since there are no page headings telling which chapter we're in (which also could have listed the year). Or simply including the year in each diary entry's date would have solved the problem.

I'm grateful the book exists and respect the work done by Whitbread, but the mechanics of the book are not great. The publisher let her down.

`I owe a great deal to this diary'.

Anne Lister (3 April 1791 - 22/9/1840) was a member of a family of prominent land owners: the Listers of Shibden Hall in Halifax (West Yorkshire, UK). In 1813, when her surviving brother accidentally drowned, Anne became heir to Shibden Hall. During her lifetime, Anne kept a diary which runs to some four million words. Thanks to this diary, we have access to a lot of detail about Anne's life: her sexual and emotional relationships with women; the minutiae of upper-class 18th century daily life; and the castes and customs of life in a provincial town.

In this book, Helena Whitbread has concentrated on the years from 1816 to 1824: this is the period during which Anne's two most significant relationships - with Mariana Lawton (nee Belcombe) and Isabella Norcliffe - developed and are chronicled in significant detail.

`I love, and only love, the fairer sex and thus beloved by them in turn, my heart revolts from any love but theirs.' - (from 29 January 1821)

In her introduction, Ms Whitbread writes that Anne Lister began her diaries in 1806, with entries becoming more detailed from 1808. But as the entries became more detailed, Anne developed a code (which she refers to as `crypthand') which gave her the freedom to describe her life in great detail. After all, no-one else would be able to understand the code, would they?

The story of how the diaries were discovered, decrypted, then hidden because of their contents and then finally partially published is fascinating. So is the content - especially (but by no means exclusively) to those interested in women's and lesbian history. Anne Lister's account of 18th century life, of the detail of routine life and of her activities and aspirations is absorbing. Some of her views and opinions would seem quite archaic to many of us today but then she never intended for us to be reading them. Now that I have read this book, I am keen to know more about Anne Lister's life. Particularly after 1826 when she became the owner of the Shibden estate.

Apparently, many of Anne's neighbours saw her as an eccentric, a bluestocking who learned Latin, Greek and Geometry and who discussed politics. Anne Lister was the first woman to be elected to the Halifax Literary and Philosophical Society. The BBC has made a documentary drama about Anne Lister which I've not yet seen. If you are interested in the social history of this era, from less conventional perspective, you may enjoy reading this book. I did.
