Clinical Epidemiology, the architecture of clinical research

The late Alvan Feinstein's magnum opus on clinical epidemiology is a wonderful book for the clinical researcher. It is not for the faint hearted or the tyro, it is filled with thought provoking ideas and Feinsteinism that make the book interesting to read. Although I should use the term "read" loosely for this book is not really one to read. Feinstein does not fail in dissecting nearly every area of epidemiology and provides cogent thought with great detail. Feinstein has been helping students learn epidemiology well before the folks at McMaster University made epidemiology a household word in health care. The beginning chapter on the different forms of "bias" is the best I have ever read.

The bible for clinical research

This book is fantastic. The author provides a solid foundation and background on the structure of clinical research. Yet, its phylosophical aproach to the subjects makes it highly appealing. I strongly recommend it to all health sciences researcher and profesional in medical profesisons (PharmD's, MD's, Ph.D's MPH's). A clinical researcher can't go without the knowledges found in this book.

About the Author
About the Authors: Joy Monice Malnar is Associate Professor of Fine Arts at Loyola University of Chicago, where she teaches courses in interior architecture and design. She holds a BFA in Interior Design from the Chicago Academy, as well as a MArch (Master of Architecture) from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Interior Design Educator's Council, and an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers. Her professional work has included both contract and residential design at such firms as Sargent and Lundy, Whitaker Associates, and Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill. Frank Vodvarka is Associate Professor of Fine Arts at Loyola University of Chicago, where he teaches graphic design, photography, and design theory. He holds a BA in Plastic & Graphic Arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and an MFA in Graphics from the University of Chicago. His professional work has included graphic design, stage design, and architectural photography, and he is a member of the Interior Design Educator's Council and the Design Communication Association.

The opening salvo in what promises to be the new turf wars of design. Though limited to architecture and attendant arts, the battle royale will be enjoined in brand, package and product design -- commercial arts are now the true avant garde of design practice.

I found Chapter 11 ("Sensory Schematics") to be the most engaging and practical, and have been using my own variation of the authors' "sensory slider" for years.

My firm's invention of what we call NeuroDesignTM offers new and fruitful options for companies looking to capture, clarify and magnify the emotionally resonant components of their visual messaging.

Not good for leaning UML

I bought this because I needed to get more firmly grounded in UML. I already had Ambler's "Elements of UML 2.0 Style" which points to this book as one possible way to get it. The other book he suggested was Fowler's "UML Distilled", but he claims his own book "goes beyond UML".

I liked the idea of learning UML in a software engineering context, especially one that emphasizes Agile programming. But that's not what I got. This is a long discourse on development models, with some bits and pieces of UML thrown in. Most of it is in a single chapter, with very few illustrations (for a visual language!). Really, UML is an afterthought.

I can't comment on the quality of Ambler's methods for software engineering -- I'm a technical writer, not a developer. What I needed was enough about Agile development to enable me to work with Agile teams. But from my limited understanding of Agile methods, I suspect that this is just old-fashioned software engineering in Agile drag.

So, this book has "UML" and "Agile" in the title, but isn't really about either. Buzzword compliance.

Great book for analysts too!!!!

I am an experienced analyst looking for an antidote to the RUPies use-case-jaundiced view of requirements. This book provided the perfect foil to the sentiment that use cases are all that is in the requirements universe.

It is not meant to be an exhaustive treatise of UML models, rather, it offers a different and, to me, refreshing view of what requirements for system building are supposed to be: agile, responsive and as varied as the projects that they are used on.

Additionally, the writing is light enough to be enjoyed and (what a novel idea) actually read. I have read Mr. Jacobson's books as well as Mr. Rumbaugh's. Albeit their authority status, their writing styles leave you wondering who they were writing for. It certainly wasn't me.

If you are looking for an alternative to the use-cases-as-panacea view of the world, this book will present a good fundamental look at how to get requirements written in a different way. And along the way, you will have a good time reading the book.
