I read the disclaimer: Writing, markings, etc... may be found on the book..

I knew I was buying a used book. I took the chance, since "I Am Jackie Chan" has been a hard book to find. Also, I've read the book already, so to me, it was worth the risk.

I received it today, and it has a few bends on the soft cover, but other than that, the book is perfect.
I noticed that the book is actually sold for six US dollars, More than double what I paid for it, but alas, I have my book and I can sleep at night.

I'm one happy customer. Maybe I got lucky, who knows. No book is the same when it's used. So this review may not be the same for other customers.

As for the book itself, it's an awesome book. You might want to rent it out at your public library if it's not available on Amazon.

I can't say much about the book without talking too much. All I can say is that it's an amazing story. Jackie Chan tells how he got his name, Jackie Chan! I always thought it was a super awesome story, and I enjoy telling others about it. When I tell them, they think it's funny and I can't help but smile. I read "I Am Jackie Chan" 14 years ago, for the first time, and I still remember a lot of the book. Why did I buy it, if I still remember the book? I'm starting a library of my own, and this book was a "Must Have" for me. That's how awesome this book is. :D

When selecting this book, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was certainly surprised when I began reading. Based off of his fun-loving charisma today, you would have never expected that he was raised in an extremely strict setting. Of course that never stopped him from acting out and putting people in their place, but punishment was cruel during his time and I couldn't help but feel sorry for him and his Chinese Drama Academy family. Reading about his struggle on finding a promising job after his life at the Academy really helped me put into perspective as to how hard he's worked to become what he is today. I was a bit surprised when he shared his struggle with acting, since that's what he's known for, but I suppose with each film, an actor's skills only get better. Overall, this autobiography is very intriguing as it is consumed of many things I've never read of before.

This is a great book about a great man! If you are a dedicated Jackie Chan fan, make sure you purchase this biography. I have enjoyed having this in my collection for many years and I am surprised to see that the price has not fluctuated much. Take care of it!

A BLACK BLOOD EXCERPT... Gemma watched Harrison wrench the door open and fly through. Her muscles were tight as she chased him out to the forecourt. She arrived just in time to see Bryan's new truck screeching away with a screaming Sam in its passenger seat.
Harrison stood puffing on the forecourt, his eyes wide with shock, his lips exploding with one repeated expletive. Gemma placed a calming hand on his shoulder as he reached into his pocket for a cell phone. She watched the truck swerve around a car and flinched.
Her eyes scanned the court for any cars she could "borrow" for pursuit, but the need was ripped from her when a motorcycle pulled up and screeched to a halt at her feet.
"Get on." The man kept his eyes on the retreating truck.
Gemma's insides recoiled as she recognized the dark hair and tanned skin of the man from the beach.
"I'm not going anywhere with you!"
"Do you really want do this now? I can't get him back on my own. Now get on the bike!"
Harrison's eyes were wild as his gaze flickered between the two of them.
"Is this..." he began to ask, but was cut off. "Yeah, police?"
Gemma watched him pace away, running a frantic hand through his hair as he spoke. Her legs began to jitter as she looked at the expectant gaze of "beach mystery man" then took on a mind of their own as they swung over the seat.
"Damn it," she muttered as she wound her arms around the man's waist and hoped Harrison would forgive her.

About the Author
Melissa Pearl was born in Auckland, New Zealand, but has spent much of her life abroad, living in countries such as Jordan, Cyprus and Pakistan... not to mention a nine month road trip around North America with her husband. She is now back in NZ and lives with her husband and two sons. She is a trained elementary teacher, but writing is her passion. Since becoming a full time mother she has had the opportunity to pursue this dream and her debut novel hit the internet in November, 2011. She loves learning about the craft of writing and endeavours to make each new book better than the last.

Great Series for young adults and us oldies

I loved this second book in the trilogy and was not disappointed at all by the plot. This novel like the first is captivating and Gemma's internal conflict because of her sense of loyalty is commendable even if a little naive, but then she is little more than a child. The introduction of Gabe intensifies things and culminates in a very suspenseful cliffhanger that makes the next book impossible to resist. Excellent reading from a very good author.

MAGICAL!!

I would like to begin the review of this excellent book by advising those who have not read Golden Blood, the first in the trilogy, to go back and read that before you read Black Blood. Gemma Heart is trying to enjoy the summer with her boyfriend Harrison Granger, before her senior year. But memories of the strange man on the beach and his warnings haunt and frighten her. Her parents, still not happy with her choice of boyfriend, are also not exactly making things easy for them.

The discovery of who exactly Gabe the mysterious man is, throws Gemma into a turmoil bringing into question who she truly is and who her true family is. More questions arise when her father starts acting secretively and going on missions into the past to retrieve the arrow head necklaces of the electus. And why are these expeditions making Gemma so tired?

The final straw comes when Gemma is forced to go back with her family to change history; thus not only ruining Gemma's dreams, but also altering the lives of countless others.

This brilliantly told story deals with horrific betrayal and extreme selfishness. On the other hand it also shows that true love can survive gruelling tests and frightful disagreements. The characters with their very realistic personalities crept even deeper into my heart during this book. The anxiety and suspense in the story are countered by the tender love scenes between Gemma and Harrison.

The author's habit of stating the time and place of each event helped me understand exactly where I was in the story. All this makes Black Blood a comfortably paced and yet enthralling read. I would recommend this book to young adults and adults alike. After reading this book which is more than deserving of its 5 stars, I can't wait to read the next book and hopefully many more by Melissa Pearl. (Ellen Fritz)

On the edge of my seat

The second book in Melissa Pearl's trilogy doesn't disappoint as we follow Gemma and Harrison on their journey.

A surprising twist brings the reader to the edge of their seat and hearts to the throat...well, my reaction anyway, as Gemma continues her struggle against her family to keep her relationship with Harrison.

Pearl continues to build her story to a wonderful crescendo, leaving the end hanging so the reader is compelled to go straight out and buy part 3...which is what I'll be doing as soon as I'm finished here...just kidding, it's already safely tucked onto my Kobo for tomorrow's lunchtime reading :)

Although I have to say I guessed one of the little plot twists at the beginning of part 1, it has only added to the reader interest and I'm keen to see how the conclusion pans out now that the cat is (almost) out of the bag...

I feel I've stumbled onto a winner with Melissa Pearl and I look forward to a long reader/writer relationship, way beyond her trilogy.

Although Florence and Naples resisted papal intrusions into their jurisdictions, on the other hand, they were eventually brought to answer directly to Rome—due in no small part to Urban VIII's subversions of the law.

If you like romance or romantic comedy books at all, Getting Lucky Number Seven is a must read for you.

Getting Lucky Number Seven is my favorite kind of new adult contemporary romance. I love the flirty nature of the friends to something more trope, I love the URST, I love nerdy humor, and I love a good college bucket list. So I knew this book was meant to be for me. And I loved it just as much as I was expecting to. It was such a fun read. I was so sure that I would love this book that I signed up for two blogs tours for it by accident. Opps. Sometimes I get a little overly excited for a book. But I was happy that I did for Getting Lucky Number Seven. I loved cute and adorable awkward science nerd Lyla. And I beyond loved her friendship with hot and smart hockey/science guy Beck. It was a winning formula for me.

Lyla is an awesome girl, but she feels a little invisible to guys. When her roommate set her up on a group date at the start of the book and she overheard those mean comments, something inside of me broke a little for her. She didn’t deserve that at all. So I don’t blame her for wanting to try some new things. So she created her college bucket list. I don’t feel like she was changing herself for a guy because she was still the same girl. She changed her clothes, but as she pointed out, she wasn’t even sure that what she was wearing before was her style. She just wore it to hide. Lyla is a strong girl, and I don’t think she would do anything that she didn’t want to do for herself. I loved her journey of self discovery. And of course, I loved her interactions with Beck.

Beck is an awesome friend. Lyla was his lab partner, and since then they have developed a completely platonic sunday movie night tradition. Beck is a solidly great guy. He drops everything for Lyla- always. And watching him squirm while she checked off items on her bucket list had me giggling. They are just too cute. Don’t worry, there are roadblocks, and character discoveries and development that make Getting Lucky Number Seven more than just a fluff read. Beck’s family situation is very tough, in a non-conventional way. I think Getting Lucky Number Seven has something for everyone.

If you like romance or romantic comedy books at all, Getting Lucky Number Seven is a must read for you.

Best NA title I have read recently

This is honestly the best book I have read in the New Adult genre recently. Beck is a hockey player, and a "player" all around honestly. He has all the recent NA romance cliches going on - athletic, handsome, smart, wealthy, manwhore. Lyla is a chemistry major, geeky. They become friends when they took a class together and were matched as lab partners, but friends is all they are at the start of the book. There aren't hidden feelings - Beck thinks of her as a friend and that is completely it, not noticing her past that. She gave up on the idea a while back, and had a different boyfriend when they initially met.

The book opens with Lyla being insulted regarding her looks and personality, and hence she decides she is going to change that. She creates a bucket list of things she wants to accomplish in college aside from the academics that have always been her focus. Her good friend Beck is recruited in her efforts to check them off. The setup is a bit cliche too honestly, but how this author writes it and lets it develop is not cliche at all, and that makes all the difference.

The romance is very very slow to develop. There is not insta-love here. They are friends who very very slowly move towards more with some falters and mishaps along the way. I like that the author didn't make it happen too easily, and what is accomplished reads very realistically, true to the age of these characters. There is some side drama of the families, but it too is well done and realistic. The heat between these two is there but does not overwhelm the rest of the story. I really loved the slow sweet romance of these two and would definitely look into reading more by this author.

I am a big fan of friends to lovers trope....it's like my own personal form of catnip. I can't get enough of them! This book also appealed to me because it's not only a friends to lovers story line, but it also has ugly duckling twist, which I also love.

Lyla is a nerd. She's smart. Quiet. Shy. Awkward around other people, especially men. She dresses kind of hippy-ish and is not your typical college student. Beck is a jock. He's smart. Outgoing. A big sweetheart and basically your typical college student. They were paired up in a chemistry lab and became fast friends.

When Lyla comes up with her college bucket list Beck is more than willing to help her out. At first the list is very innocent: get a new look, do a keg stand, sing karaoke, kiss a stranger, get a tattoo...things Lyla thinks that all college students should do. But the last item changes EVERYTHING: Have mind-blowing sex.

Since Beck agreed to help Lyla with her list, the two fall into a friends with benefits situation. What he doesn't expect is to fall for her. But unfortunately for Lyla, Beck has a chip on his shoulder regarding relationships and when he learns something about his father's past, he knows that he can't be the man Lyla deserves.

I just love Lyla and Beck as a couple. They complement each other perfectly. They are super comfortable with each other and have such a great friendship. They tell each other corny science jokes and send each other funny cat photos like friends do and also have that "mind-blowing sex" that Lyla wanted to have.

Short story bad boy action

I've been wanting to read this story for a while. While we met Cat briefly in the previous book, this was a good chance to see her paired up with the unlikely Hades. The author, of course, manages to spin it all into an absolutely perfect romance.

Hades might look like a tough guy, but he's got the perfect blend of sarcasm, humor, and heart. When facing off with his own jailor, Azagoth, he's tough as nails, but when he is faced with babies or friends, he is a whole different person. Cat, however, is still trying to find herself. Sure, she's trying to redeem her horrible actions by acting as Azagoth's housekeeper, but admittedly she is pretty bad at it. She breaks stuff all the time, but this time she has inadvertently let some souls slip passed Azagoth's judgement. Woops.

In an attempt to make things right, she ends up throwing herself into the worst possible place for her - the Underworld. Aside from her little incident, the whole place is also in the midst of its own riots and escape attempts. Luckily, she's got her reluctant hero, Hades, who just so happens to also be her secret crush. These two sizzled and popped right off the pages when they were alone. The combination of innocent curiosity and bad boy antics was perfection. If you're a fan of this series, the author's world, or just paranormal romance, this 1001 Dark Nights is required reading.

Larissa Ione never disappoints and Hades is another book that will be making its way to my favorites list. I loved the characters and the story this book and series is amazing! Hades has everything I hoped for and more and I recommend if you haven't read it yet you should grab your copy and start reading.

Hades' Story

The most recent installment of Larissa Ione's Daemonica series. No, it was not Revenant.

Hades it is a novella of the blue haired mohawk, smart mouthed, sex symbol of the underworld readers were first introduced to in Eternal Rider, part of Ione's introduction of the Lords of Deliverance. If you have no idea what I am talking about, stop right here and go catch up on your reading.

We finally learn more about the relationship between Azagoth and Hades, how Sheoul-Gra works, and a cute peek at how Azagoth and Lilli are bumping along post-Azagoth. The only thing that stopped this story from being a "5 Star" for me was how complex the problems became so quickly, and just as quickly, how they were resolved. To me, Hades' story could have easily been its own novel. Toss this novella business. Ione has gift for drawing you into the story, the hunt and excitement for travelling in the world she has created, so I want to linger. I don't want to 'poof' out because of a page limitation set by the publisher.

Cataclysm, or Cat, is "Unfallen", working on regaining her wings, and we learn more about the rebellion in Heaven and back-story from other players who were at work in Reaver and the rest of the Daemonica characters stories. Have I mentioned yet that this is a great series?

So if you're still feeling the pangs of withdrawal from the Daemonica world, be sure to read Hades story while we wait for Ione to let loose the next tale. I know I can hardly wait!
