Easy read, but room for improvement

This book was most certainly an easy read, giving step-by-step explanations and instructions for setting up LAMP, that is no where near as intimidating as all the other resources out there. I was quite pleased with it! As you can see by the other reviews, this book has hit the mark!

However, my complaint about the book is that since it is geared more towards newbies to the Linux world, the step-by-step instructions are not completely accurate. Those that follow the book word-for-word will find themselves stuck unless they have a basic working knowledge of Unix/Linux, or know someone that does.

This book uses Fedora as the linux-distribution.

Despite my one complaint, this is one of the easier to read books out there, and I would recommend for anyone new to the Linux world wanting to set up a web server.

Edit (9/27/05): If you prefer to take an easier route than this guide, search google for apachefriends.org or XAMPP. This book will teach you different processes, and go through reasons why certain things are done. While the information is useful, if you do not wish to go that in-depth into the subject, and just get a webserver up quickly, try this method. You will not learn all the intricate step-by-step procedures this book will teach you, but you should have LAMP set up within 10 minutes. Hope this information helps! :)

A valuable book for setting up a web and e-mail server

Linux, qmail, PHP, MySQL and Apache form a rewarding and rock-solid combination. Authors Rosebrock and Filson and the good folk at Sybex deserve accolades for conceiving a book directed at just this combination and bringing it to press.

The distinctive feature of this book is just how readable it is. A myriad choices exist when it comes to Linux distributions and server applications for e-mail, database, web and server-side scripting. In each case, the authors summarize the alternatives and, with focused and generally unarguable judgment, choose the one they consider to be best. Without looking back, they then proceed to guide the reader through its essential installation and maintenance. It is clear they strive to make a system that is well integrated. An example of this is their decision to cover Apache 1.3 rather than Apache 2.0. Although they clearly like what they see in the newer branch, for reasons of interoperability with PHP they select Apache 1.3 for their book.

Rosebrock and Filson serve as trustworthy mentors in the whole process of getting a complete installation up and running. They clearly teach from experience and with an appreciation of the frustrations beginning administrators may face. For example, while admitting the vi editor's power, they have the reader use the friendlier editor pico for basic editing.

In addition to covering the main server applications, this book provides a cursory introduction to auxiliary programs like the various MySQL and qmail utilities. A number of network tools such as nmap and traceroute are given quick overviews. For my part, I think the book should contain more discussion of the secure shell client and server and the process of creating and maintaining public and private keys.

"Setting up LAMP" is a well-written, well-targeted book. May it serve as a guide to a whole new generation of administrators who wish to build a complete, fast and robust web and mail server.

Good information but outdated

This book was probably great a couple of years ago. It has great step-by-step instructions, and it walks you through things in a very detailed manner.

However, since the versions of all software (and the OS) used in the book have been updated at least a few times since 2004, I ran into several issues. Maybe 10% of all the links are accurate (which you need to install the .rpm files in the way the book tells you to), and when you do find the updated versions of everything, some of the commands the book gives you produce errors. Since the instructions probably worked correctly in 2004, there is no information on what those errors mean or how to fix them.

In short, I'm setting this book aside to find something more recent, and reloading the system I was using to test this with. If you do not have prior experience and a good understanding of how all of these programs work and how to troubleshoot their errors, I would recommend finding a more up-to-date book.

But even though Machu Picchu is now the best known of all Incan ruins, its function in Incan civilization is still not clear. Some have speculated that it was an outpost or a frontier citadel, while others believe it to be a sanctuary or a work center for women. Still others suggest that it was a ceremonial center or perhaps even the last refuge of the Incas after the Spanish conquest. One of the most theories to take hold is that Machu Picchu was the summer dwelling of the Inca’s royal court, the Inca’s version of Versailles. As was the case with the renaming of Mayan and Aztec ruins, the names given to various structures by archaeologists are purely imaginary and thus not very helpful; for example, the mausoleum, palace or watchtower at Machu Picchu may have been nothing of the sort.
What is clear at Machu Picchu is that the urban plan and the building techniques employed followed those at other Incan settlements, particularly the capital of Cuzco. The location of plazas and the clever use of the irregularities of the land, along with the highly developed aesthetic involved in masonry work, followed the model of the Inca capital. At Machu Picchu, the typical Incan technique of meticulously assembling ashlar masonry and creating walls of blocks without a binding material is astounding. The blocks are sometimes evenly squared and sometimes are of varying shape. In the latter case, the very tight connection between the blocks of stone seems quite remarkable. Even more astounding than the precise stone cutting of the Incas is the method that they used for the transportation and movement on site of these enormous blocks. The Incas did not have the wheel, so all the work was accomplished using rollers and levers.

Not just for the classroom!

When I ordered this book, I thought it might be just another text book, however, Ms. Sivulka is a skillful writer worth reading at any level. Her subject matter is interesting, obviously carefully selected and well-coordinated. The illustrations are entertaining and pertinent. It's a fun read with lots of know-how apparent.

Neither History nor Cultural History

The Sivulkas' work is a rather long narrative of American advertising -- with very little to offer beyond reproductions of some rather commonplace ads from the last two hundred years. Much of the information they offer seems to come from other sources, and there is no real bibliography to the book. It is most misleadingly titled "cultural history" since there is so very little to the book beyond a chronology, and that is full of mistakes, over-simplifications, and such bland statements that there is nothing to be learned from this book. Others have written much better and more meaningful things about the history of advertising, and charged less than [$$] for it.

Great reference, name is a bit of a misnomer, though...

Advertising has been around since the dawn of civilization. The ancient Greeks created signs for their theatres and any open-air market of any ancient culture shows evidence of signage advertising different wares. With the invention of the printing press and movable type, however, the age of information and advertising truly began.
The history of American advertising is as packed with dates, places, people and events as any other slice of American history, and in "Soap, Sex and Cigarettes" Juliann Sivulka has done an exhaustive job of outlining these very things. With chapters going from 1492-1800, beginning with the colonization of the States, through the Roaring 20's and ending with "1990s and Beyond: The Media Revolution", this book should be required reading for any marketing/advertising undergrad. Indeed, considering the density of the material-- as thorough as any text on the Revolutionary War-- I imagine it IS required collegiate reading for students entering these professions.
The book is packed with various illustrations of real ads from the time periods, and one could easily get an overview of American advertising by simply leafing through the pages and looking at the ads and how they evolve from a 1608 London woodcut pamphlet advertising the New World ("Excellent fruites by Planting in Virginia") to the modern "Just Do It" and "Got Milk?" high glossy ad campaigns. The text is ordered and well written and can be read both as collegiate material and as casual reading (though there are a LOT of dates, places, times and events for the casual reader). The author frequently includes common ad slogans throughout the book that have become staples of American advertising: "His masters voice", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", "Remember: only YOU can prevent forest fires" and "melts in your mouth, not in your hand" to name just a VERY few. There are also brief timelines of some of the highlights of product inventions that advertising impacted, such as Twinkies introduction in 1930 (originally filled with banana creme), pet rocks in 1975 and the new age of advertising begun in 1989 by Nissan's Infiniti where the actual product was never shown.
The book is subtitled "A Cultural History of American Advertising", but it is here where it falls short. It's an excellent resource for the history of advertising, but it's not so great at demonstrating how advertising has influenced our society. There are short parts demonstrating the stereotype of people of color and women, for example African-American people portrayed as grinning Sambos who are thrilled to ecstasy that Gold Dust washing powder makes your pots n' pans sparkle; Asian people with long pigtails and coolie hats in outlandish dress; women typically in household roles advertising everything from soap to washing machines (while trying to appear sexy at the same time: "You'd think I'm a flapper, but I CAN keep house"-- S.O.S. Pads, 1927). However, this aspect is not nearly as well fleshed-out as I would have expected from the title. I was expecting something more along the lines of cultural anthropology or Noam Chomsky-- explaining how advertising not only reflected society but INFLUENCED it-- and found little to be had.
No one would argue the fact that sex and celebrity status are constantly being used to sell everything from cars to toothpaste, and the unspoken meaning of most ads is something like "Drink Figgy-Fiz Cola and you'll have to beat the beautiful babes away with a lug wrench!" Most people ignore advertisements or complain about them and generally pay little or no attention to them at all. Still, the amount of advertising is only INCREASING as time goes on and the ads do influence our culture substantially. Should you doubt me, ask yourself why were children murdering other children for Nike shoes during the late 80's? No one was attacking me for my black Keds, and God help you if you wore Buster Browns after the age of 4. Why? Because the ads told us there were certain products to value above others (and therefore we could justify paying 120% more for those products as well) and we believed them. THIS sort of "cultural history" and analysis was missing from this book, which is a shame because Ms. Sivulka could have shed quite a lot of light onto this still-dark corner of our society. Perhaps she didn't because the more we know about advertising and how it works, the less power it holds over us.
In closing, "Soap, Sex and Cigarettes" is a great resource both for the professional marketer/advertiser and a fascinating read for the casual thinker of pop/modern culture. It's a bit expensive (though college texts always are), but it's exhaustively researched and very well written. Highly recommended!

About the Author
Known as a "practical mystic," James Ray grew up the son of a minister, immersed in traditional Christian religion. He later expanded his studies to include a multitude of other spiritual traditions and has been initiated into three shamanic orders from the Incan culture and the supernatural Huna tradition of ancient Hawaii.

Great book if you need a kick in the pants

This book reminds me of the old days when I was devouring everything written by Carlos Castaneda. The difference is that Mr. Ray doesn't talk about the actual experiences he's had with his spiritual teachers -- rather, he tells you a few things about how you should (and shouldn't) live your life.

While I have no problem with the principles Mr. Ray is teaching (I am somewhat familiar with most of it already), I cannot help being turned off by his writing style. I feel that Mr. Ray shows an emormous contempt for the lifestyle of the average person. He uses words like "whimp" and "wet paper bag" rather frequently. I find this arrogant and snotty.

Sure, it is easy to get negative feelings when you notice how some people live, but a person at an advanced level of spiritual achievment ought to have gone beyond such negativity.

Also he talks about how people and relationships are "dispensable". My spontaneous thought when I read this is: "This guy obviously never has had children!" If he'd had the experience of caring for a baby of his own, he wouldn't be able to talk so flippantly about others being "dispensable".

He talks a lot about how he fights his Ego -- and I cannot help but think: "Seems like the Ego is fighting itself".

If you want to read a very different book about spirituality, I strongly recommend "The Power of Now" -- also I urge you to read "Soul on Fire": Soul on Fire: A Transformational Journey from Priest to Shaman by Peter Calhoun. The latter book takes a shamanic approach to spirituality, but unlike Mr. Rays' book it is devoid of arrogance and doesn't talk down to you. (I hope Mr. Ray will forgive me for recommending a competitor!)

More details, please

This book gives a general overview of spiritual principles but could have included detailed information as to how they work, why they work and more importantly, specific methods of applying them to the reader's life in a practical way. If you are looking for a mere introduction then you will like this book, but if you want real details (that is, a more "HOW TO", hands-on,life-altering approach to spirituality) I suggest the following books: YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE by Louise Hay,THE POWER IS WITHIN YOU by Louise Hay, MANIFEST YOUR DESTINY by Wayne Dyer and THE DIRECT PATH by Andrew Harvey (read in that order)as a good place to start. The techniques offered in the DIRECT PATH will keep you busy for years. The Metta technique described in that book is very effective. Peace and love!

29 Practical Tips for Living a More Spiritual & Powerful Life

I first learned about James Ray a year before his association with The Secret book and Law of Attraction principles. I knew he had been on Larry King and was known as a Life Coach who talked about prosperity and the law of attraction. I also became aware that he was into spirituality and considered himself a practical mystic. After I wrote my own book on the Law of Attraction in 2007, Beyond the Secret: Spiritual Power and the Law of Attraction, I was interested to see that this book by James Ray included the words Spiritual Power in his sub-title. So, I purchased this book curious to learn more about him and his views.

First, I got the book at Barnes & Nobel (sorry Amazon) and paid the full price of $24.95. Considering the thin size of the book I was a bit shocked at the price. It is only 140 pages long and books that go for that price are usually 250 - 300 or more pages in length! But, I wanted to see what he said, so I purchased it anyway. (By the way, Amazon.com is cheaper and to be honest I would have felt best if I had bought it here as a used or "like new" book for a lot less money).

Price aside, I was pleased with the content. The book is outlined as a series of 29 tips with a three to four pages of recommendations about each tip. Tips from the Table of Contents include: Transcend the Ego, Less is More, Be Unique, Just Be, Find Comfort in Discomfort, and so on. What I liked best about these tips was how congruent they were with what I also consider to be a practial approach to spirituality. Ray's advice is full of wisdom and insight that can only be ascertained by someone who is attempting to actually live a spiritual life. It let me know that Ray is someone who is walking the walk and not just talking the talk. This gives what he writes a level of authenticity which for a savvy reader like me is a requirement (and is useful for those who may not have read a lot of spiritual books).

And, I truly believe that anyone who follows the advice Ray gives in this book will experience a more meaningful and powerful life based on an ability to stand on your own in life as an authentic, dynamic, and powerful human being in a truly spiritual way. On a totally different note, it also left me wondering about Ray's affiliation with the popular The Secret book. I say this because as this book by Ray reveals, he seems in alignment with principles that go way beyond the hype and materialistic view that was the main presentation of The Secret. Hey, I understand, it was a hugely successful book and anyone who was included in it got a marketing boost. It's just I believe you will discover what James Ray is really all about by reading this book, which is much more in alignment with the teachings in my own book, Beyond the Secret, which states that the "real secret" in life has nothing to do with the law of attraction, which can be used in a selfish, or selfless way. The "real secret" has to do with what kind of person you become while you are here. Practical Spirituality and James Ray give you that kind of guidance. It was a pleasure to learn more about him. And a gift to read this powerful and rewarding book.
