About the Author
Jerry H. Bentley (1949 2012) was a Professor of History at the University of Hawai i, M noa. Educated at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the University of Minnesota, his early research focused on Renaissance humanist scholarship of the Bible, but after coming to Hawai i in 1976 he emerged as one of the international leaders in world history scholarship and teaching. He published a wide range of articles on comparative and transnational methods in history and several books, including the seminal Old World Encounters: Cross-Cultural Contact and Exchange in Pre-Modern Times (1993) and one of the most popular textbooks for teaching world history, Traditions and Encounters. He was the founding editor of the Journal of World History, and served as its editor-in-chief for twenty-two years, and was also a founding member of the World History Association in 1982. He developed standards and curriculum locally, nationally, and internationally, established a flourishing PhD program in world history at the University of Hawai'i, directed numerous seminars for scholars and teachers across the globe, and fostered a world history program at Capital Normal University in Beijing.
Herbert F. Ziegler is an associate professor of history at the University of Hawai'i. He has taught world history since 1980 and currently serves as director of the world history program at the University of Hawai'i. He also serves as book review editor of the Journal of World History. His interest in twentieth-century European social and political history led to the publication of Nazi Germany's New Aristocracy(1990). He is at present working on a study that explores from a global point of view the demographic trends of the past ten thousand years, along with their concomitant technological, economic, and social developments. His other current research project focuses on the application of complexity theory to a comparative study of societies and their internal dynamics.

Facinating presentation

I finished college in 1969, and am not an official student. However, this book was facinating to me. The older you get, the more meaningful history is!
I loved the format: an overview of each period in world history, then actual written material from that era. Prose, poetry, and photos of artwork were included. The material on Islam was particularly interesting, for instance, since I knew almost nothing about it. I feel much better prepared to understand present-day situations now.
Having read this book, I hunger for other textbooks on world history.

Ignore other reviews. This is the most popular AP World History book for many good reasons.

I know some people would like to ignore India and just teach Western Civ. If that is how you feel don't get this book. If on the other hand you want a well written, interesting and very informative history book with a global perspective, then this is the book for you. I am a teacher, and unlike an earlier review suggested, by students have never told me this is a boring book. They sometimes complain about some of the chapters being too long, but compared to other similar books like Stearns, this is much more engaging. This is the book that most of my colleagues use for teaching world history (also check out Strayer, which is probably second.) I have seen all of the books commonly used for AP World History, and this is the most interesting and informative of the bunch.

Very readable

For a textbook, I found this book very easy to read (even took it to the beach with me one day!). It was organized well, fast-paced, and included a great summary at the end of each chapter, as well as a timeline with notable dates and events. A good selection for a general world history college course.
