Very Useful Handbook

The Handbook of Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychology is a must have if studying child psychology at postgraduate level. It is probably one of the few text books that I will still use in clinical practice once finishing University training.
The first few chapters gives a solid background on how to do psychological letters and reports, and gives good overall summary of child development. Sections are divided into development stages with the more common problems separated into chapters such as sleep problems, toileting problems in the infancy and early childhood section; and drug abuse, mood problems in the adolscent section. These chapters cover childhood issues and disorders in a succinct and methodical format including classification, diagnosic criteria, aetiological theories, assessment, treatment, and further reading. Information is easy to find in this book as well as having a very readable style.
Money is well spent on this book!

Phil Nauta grew up working for his parents in their garden center, maintaining the nursery stock and landscaping. He was also in charge of maintaining their 9-hole golf course while he went to university, obtaining his business degree. He then completed a Certificate in Organic Landscape Management from Gaia College and later taught courses there.

Since then, he has played many roles in the organic gardening world, starting a gardening business called Only Organic, and then The Organic Gardener's Pantry to supply high quality organic fertilizers. He received Permaculture Design and Sustainable Building and Design certificates and became a Certified Organic Land Care Professional.

Phil works with his wife Heather, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, to help people improve their health and the health of their gardens and the planet through the SmilingGardener.com website, sharing innovative methods with organic growers worldwide.

Sigh. Paramagnetism?

The majority of the useful information in this book could be distilled into far fewer pages than are presented to the reader.

Sections like this one on paramagnetism are annoying on multiple levels:

"Soil is paramagnetic [...] highly paramagnetic soils are more energetically aligned with the earth and even the universe, and actually invite energy into them [...] Increased paramagnetism brings increased water retention, [...] Plants are diamagnetic [...] I imagine it's a good thing, too, because it gives the soil and plants a kind of yin-yang relationship." Oh, ok.

Now this is broken up to save you some time and it's only a small section of the book - but the... mindset in the above snippets permeates this book. None of the specific claims are backed up with specific footnotes and sources (though a general bibliography is provided).

The most useful information revolves around soil testing and the actions to take when the results of the test are received. You can find that same information online for free. So too with soil inoculants, compost tea, etc.

If you're interested in understanding Mr. Nauta's world view then I recommend this book. If you're interested in building soils naturally you're better off with free online sources.

Building Soils Naturally: Innovative Methods for Organic Gardeners by Phil Nauta (AKA The Smiling Gardener) is all about helping you to grow the best quality food possible, starting from the ground up. It all starts with healthy soil. With living, balanced soil, plants are healthier, more pest and disease resistant, there are less weed problems, and your garden better accommodates moisture fluctuations.

Begin with Soil Testing

Phil advocates starting out with a good quality soil test to establish a baseline for your soil and identify any glaring problems up front. If your budget allows, annual tests or tests every few years are great, but not essential, although they will allow you to tailor your soil amending for best results. If your budget is really tight, Phil also offers tips for visual identification of soil problems, such as looking at color and texture and plant growth. Certain weeds will also proliferate in soils that are deficient in certain minerals. Balance the soil, and the weeds disappear.

Create Healthy Soil in Six Steps

Building Soils Naturally breaks down the hows and whys of soil building into six steps/components that are needed for optimal soil health. They are:

Water
Organic Matter
Microbial Innoculants
Supplemental Nutrients

I know this may sound "out there" to many, but to me, it's logical. Most of us know that listening to music can relax you (or excite you), and that certain noises are extremely irritating (nails on chalkboard, jackhammers, etc). Evidence suggests that stray voltage can cause significant health problems for animals and for people, why not plants? I think I'm going to be doing some experimenting in the coming years with some plant music out in the garden.

Any downsides to this book?

There is a *LOT* of information in this book. The beginning gardener or someone with very little technical background might feel overwhelmed at times. For those on a very tight budget, some of the tests, supplements and soil amendments recommended may be too expensive. That said, reading this book gave me a ton of ideas for improvising "homebrew/homegrown" options (which Phil hopes to expand on as well in future publications).

I think Building Soils Naturally has the potential to fundamentally change the way you look at your garden. You can use weeds and pests as diagnostic tools (and watch how they disappear over time with proper management). If you want to get fancy, you can get a refractometer and measure the Brix readings of your produce, which should also improve over time. (You could also measure store produce, and see how it comes up lacking.)

I know that in the past two weeks as I've been reading the book, I've made changes and started brainstorming about things I want to do this season and into the future. I like books that get me thinking, and I firmly believe that improving the health of our soils will improve the health of our plants, and in turn improve our health.

New Ideas for Your Garden

I FIRST STARTED READING PHIL NAUTA and his Smiling Gardener Blog in the fall of 2010. Right away, his blog struck me as different from the other how-to-garden-better blogs. It was obvious that Phil had a wealth of knowledge. Plus, his info was often quite a bit more "technical" than the others.

To give you a sense of what I mean, Phil regularly wrote about subjects like mycorrhizal fungi, biological transmutation and the brix test. You've got to admit that these topics are not what you'd normally find on blogs like A Way to Garden or Urban Organic Gardener.

One Smiling Gardener article that really got my attention was on how gardeners could potentially catch mad cow disease from bone meal. Phil made a strong enough case against bone meal that I decided to stop using it on my flowers.

So when Phil offered a free review copy of his newly minted book called Building Soils Naturally*, I knew right away that it would be packed with interesting info. It didn't take much convincing to get me to review it.

BUILDING SOIL FROM A TO Z

Phil's book starts with the basics of improving your soil, some of which he also wrote about in his Suburban Hobby Farmer guest article. Then it progresses to the deeply technical aspects of determining and curing specific soil nutrient deficiencies.

Much of the information could only come from someone who has studied plant nutrition in some detail. No question Phil has studied. He started a natural fertilizer company and has taught organic horticulture at Gaia College, a school that teaches holistic land management and environmentally sustainable technologies.

There's also no question that he's against standard NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) fertilizer. He challenges the proponents of NPK whenever he has the opportunity and encourages readers to go beyond even organic soil improvement methods with soil tests and what I'll call exotic additives.

Unquestionably, parts of Building Soils Naturally will be more sophisticated than what many backyard gardeners will be willing to put into practice. Be warned, Phil frequently suggests seeking out and paying for soil additives. Regular readers of this site know that this goes against the spirit of Suburban Hobby Farmer, where I try to pay as little as possible for my soil improvement.

PAYING WILL BE WORTH IT

Phil promises that paying will be worth it. He believes that once you reach the perfect soil for a specific plant, it will be invisible to insect predators and diseases. Produce will be tastier and much more nutritious. Plus, the shelf life will be greatly extended. In short, a fruit or vegetable grown in ideal soil conditions will be no less than a super food.

Phil is skilled at persuasion. He makes a great case for his methodology. Still, some claims seem too good to be true. Take Phil's point that plants grown in ideal soil will be invisible to predators. This has not always been the case in my garden. My blueberries have nearly ideal conditions, including soil that is perfect for them. Yet, Japanese beetles are able to locate them and prefer them over other crops that have been weakened by less than ideal soil. My philosophy is nothing works 100 percent of the time.

Still, this book has more new ideas than anything I've read in a long time. There are many suggestions that I want to test in my garden. Here are five examples:

1. Water your soil microbes, not just your plants. Many gardeners, myself included, have been guilty of watering only in the root zone of my vegetable plants. I thought this was a good way to save water. The problem with pinpoint watering is that the soil life outside of the wet zone is deprived of water. Microorganisms, earthworms and insects need water as much as the plants, and the health of your plants depends on the health of these organisms.

2. Add seaweed to your compost. I've been thinking that seaweed would be a nutrient-rich, free source of material for the compost. This book gave me the kick in the pants to go get some. According to Phil, there's no need to rinse the salt out before adding it to the pile.

3. Try diluted sea water as plant food. This is one of the most controversial ideas in the book. The premise is that sea water has minerals and active organic substances that will benefit your plants. Phil points to research by Maynard Murray that concluded that minerals from sea water increased yields and improved the overall health of plants. As you might expect, others believe that essentially "salting" your soil is a bad idea. I'm going to test a 10 percent solution of sea water on a small part of my garden. I'll let you know if it works for me.

4. Add hairy vetch as part of your cover crop. Phil makes the case that cover crop should be a mixture of legumes and grasses. Legumes add nitrogen to the soil and grasses provide high volumes of organic matter. He likes hairy vetch* as a legume because it captures the most nitrogen. He likes cereal rye as a grass because of the volume of organic matter it provides. I'm going to try a combination of the two this fall.

5. Inoculate your compost with new microbes. One way to get some diversity of microbes in your compost is to take a few handfuls of soil from an ecosystem that's different from your garden, say a forest or a meadow, and add it to your pile. This will help create microbe diversity in your pile and ultimately your soil, which will help make for healthier plants.

There are many more interesting ideas about how to improve soil health in Building Soils Naturally. Most of these involve more expensive and often hard to find ingredients. Professional landscapers (organic) will be very interested in Phil's suggestions because they must get superior results and often have a budget for buying soil amendments.

On the other hand, I've always felt that it doesn't make sense to spend more on your garden than it would to buy organic produce. Of course, it's tempting to invest in some of these ingredients when the benefit is ultra nutritious food.

Where do I begin?

I haven't read a book like this in a while. I craved this story needing to know the details of Talon's past. The passion between Jade and Talon is so beautiful. There are so many strings undone right now I need to wrap everything up.

Jade is a complete character who knows Talon is screwed up but still loves him. She wants to help him see through his past but I don't know if he ever will. His past is such a mystery and I'm dying to know what happened. We get little teaser bites but not the complete story and then the dangling candy at the end... come on... how could you leave us that way.

I just want to devour the next story. I want more details. The book flowed well keeping my interest. Always a surprise in every chapter, things happened I didn't expect and I was kept on my toes throughout the story. I couldn't put it down. I need the next book. I crave the next story.

Marjorie and Jade need to investigate more. I need to know the truth. They need to read more in the boxes...

What a great story from this author. I look forward to the next book. Amazing!

Hot, sexy, troubled

I didn't have alot of expectations with this new to me author...but I was floored. Talon and Jade's story is absolutely riveting. The characters are all flawed but perfect, if that makes any sense. The horror that is Talon (and the Steel Brothers lives) sucks you right in. The sexy times were just hot, hot, hot. Your heart sinks and flies and you wonder what next? What will be revealed? I hated to see it end.

Well, I'm a little late to the party, but I am finally here!! What a great story, Miss Helen!! It took no time for me to become hooked into this story. Jade and Talon are perfect. I love all the characters in the story, and cannot wait to dive into Book 2. The Steel Family are a perfect mix of sexy and mysterious. While I'm especially anxious to know Talon's story, I'm sure the other members have an equally intense story. Bring it on, Miss Helen!!!!

Stochastic Simulation and Applications in Finance with MATLAB Programs explains the fundamentals of Monte Carlo simulation techniques, their use in the numerical resolution of stochastic differential equations and their current applications in finance. Building on an integrated approach, it provides a pedagogical treatment of the need-to-know materials in risk management and financial engineering.

The book takes readers through the basic concepts, covering the most recent research and problems in the area, including: the quadratic re-sampling technique, the Least Squared Method, the dynamic programming and Stratified State Aggregation technique to price American options, the extreme value simulation technique to price exotic options and the retrieval of volatility method to estimate Greeks. The authors also present modern term structure of interest rate models and pricing swaptions with the BGM market model, and give a full explanation of corporate securities valuation and credit risk based on the structural approach of Merton. Case studies on financial guarantees illustrate how to implement the simulation techniques in pricing and hedging.

About the Author
HUU TUE HUYNH obtained his D.Sc. in communication theory from Laval University, Canada. From 1969 to 2004 he was a faculty member of Laval University. He left Laval University to become Chairman of the Department of data processing at the College of Technology of The Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Since 2007 he has been Rector of the Bac Ha International University, Vietnam. His main recent research interest covers Fast Monte Carlo methods and applications.

VAN SON LAI is Professor of Finance at the Business School of Laval University, Canada. He obtained his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Georgia, USA and a master degree in water resources engineering from the University of British Columbia, Canada. He is also a CFA charterholder from the CFA Institute and a registered P.Eng. in the Province of British Columbia. An established teacher and researcher in banking, financial engineering, and risk management, he has extensively published in mainstream banking, economics, and finance journals.

ISSOUF SOUMARÉ is currently associate professor of finance and managing director of the Laboratory for Financial Engineering at Laval University. His research and teaching interests included risk management, financial engineering and numerical methods in finance. He has published his theoretical and applied finance works in economics and finance journals. Dr Soumaré holds a PhD in Finance from the University of British Columbia, Canada, MSc in Financial Engineering from Laval University, Canada, MSc in Statistics and Quantitative Economics and MSc and BSc in Applied Mathematics from Ivory Coast. He is also a certified Professional Risk Manager (PRM) of the Professional Risk Managers’ International Association (PRMIA).

CD-ROM replaced by non-existent companion website - BEWARE

I bought a copy of "Stochastic Simulation and applications in finance with MATLAB". There was supposed to be a CD with the book, with sample MATLAB codes etc, but in the opening pages of the book it says this has been converted to a URL on a companion website.

However if one follows the URL link given, there is no mention of MATLAB material whatsoever .

I would like a response from the publisher.

I've read handful of books on quantitative finance over the years. Most of a few good books that focus on rigorous mathematical treatment often lack practicality. I've been looking for books that offer a rigorous and yet intuitive, practical way to gain an understanding into quantitative finance in general and MonteCarlo simulation in particular. Therefore I often browse Matlab website in search of good books that combine theory and computation. I have found only a good one so far (Higham). But it was written rather for beginners and/or students.

Recently I found this one which is an excellent book for intermediate and advanced users, practitioners and academics alike. The book strikes a good balance between theory and practice; it presents a rigorous and yet intuitive treatment of quantitative finance, from fundamentals of probability theory and random processes, through the foundations of Monte-Carlo method and all the way to real-world applications. The book is up to date with latest research in computational finance. It contains not only simple, pedagogical Matlab programs but also more sophisticate methods such as quadratic resampling, dynamic programming technique of Barraquand and Martineau. The final chapters present the authors' own research, mostly on financial guarantees (credit derivatives) and Value at Risk.

The book presents not only rigorous theory, but also practical, well-designed Matlab programs. The programs contain useful explanatory comments so they are very easy to follow. They can be used as is or adapted for your own purposes. Recently I had to price an exotic executive stock option, and I just chose a Matlab program from the book and modified it. The whole pricing process took just a couple of hours. That is, the programs are good for practitioners working in a high-pressure environment like myself. Academic researchers will also find the Matlab programs useful as the authors generously made codes of their own research on financial guarantees and Value at Risks available. These programs serve as a good starting point for other research projects.

A drawback of this book is that you need Matlab which can be expensive if you don't qualify for an educational licence. However, it does not require other expensive add-ons. I think that interested readers can use open-source Matlab clones like Octave, Scilab etc.

About the Author
"Michael Chaplin started his career in print and television journalism, working for both ITV and the BBC, but has been a full-time writer since the mid-90s, working extensively in television and radio, creating numerous series, serials and single dramas. He has written more than 10 plays for Live Theatre in Newcastle, all directed by Max Roberts, most recently two pieces co-written in 2009 with his son Tom Chaplin about the on and off-field dramas of their beloved Newcastle United, You Couldn't Make It Up and You Really Couldn't Make It Up. About the Author

JENNA USHKOWITZ plays Tina on the huge FOX hit, Glee. She started her acting career at the age of three and made her first appearance on Broadway's The King and I at the age of nine. Jenna returned to Broadway for Spring Awakening and has been on Glee since the show's inception.

I am all about "Glee". So pre-ordering Jenna Ushkowitz's new book "Choosing Glee" was only natural. I have to say this book is just beautiful. The pictures of Jenna and/or the Glee gang is worth the purchase price alone. Jenna's offers up some fun background stories about her life and some Glee adventures. The book is about how Jenna stays positive and focuses on reaching her goals and being true to herself. Its presented in a fun, entertaining, and positive way. I do think the book could appeal to the younger audience as well as to the adult market. Most of her principles explained in the book can apply to both age groups. The only negative is that I think that the advice given could have been more detailed and maybe provided some further explanation. The chapter self evaluations were cute and practical and I really loved some of the quotes provided. The portion about Chris Colfer was especially poignant and beautiful. Darren Criss offered up a memorable quote and I loved Jenna's uplifting songlists. She also quotes a song that I find very meaningful to my life personally "Chasing Pavements" by Adele. Overall this book itself is quite a joy and I am committed to following anything else Jenna may release.

Exceeded Already High Expectations

I am a huge fan of Jenna Ushkowitz, and have been since Glee premiered. Watching her in and reading interviews and seeing her in behind the scenes footage, and following her on twitter, I have always found her to be an extremely inspirational person. Without going into too much detail, she is the first Celebrity I have ever connected with and felt like I actually got something out of being a fan of hers. Her constant positivity is infectious and she has always reminded me that you don't have to focus on the bad things in life, you can choose to see the positive side of it, something that I forgot a long time ago.

Due to all of that, I was so excited for this book, and considered it my bible before I even read it. After it finally came out though, and I did read it, I was blown away, it was so much more than I was even expecting, and I was expecting A LOT out of it. The way she practices what she preaches and uses, sometimes extremely personal, stories from her own life as examples is inspiring and so brave of her to do. It's given me even more respect for her than I already had. I always felt like I had a pretty good idea about her life, how she grew up and landed her part on Glee from interviews she's done over the years, and thought maybe those bits would be a bit repetitive to me, but she covers the spectrum of her life in so much more detail through all those stories than I was expecting and it was so eye opening. Her style of writing feels like she's talking TO you and not AT you, which makes it so much easier to take everything in and the way she breaks it down into little steps instead of feeling like you'd be changing your whole life made me walk away from this book with the feeling that I could actually do anything.

As a bonus, there are SO many pictures, I would say 95% of which Glee fans have never seen, and little words of wisdom from her friends and castmates that give this book such a sweet and personal touch. There were a few moments in it that really hit a note with me, and made me cry, but I definitely consider that a good thing, and the rest of the time I was smiling, it's such a feel good book, and really opened up my mind more than it already was. I don't think you need to be a hard core, or even a Glee fan, period, to appreciate the advice she has to give.

Very Inspirational. An Amazing Read.

I absolutely adored this book. When I read it, I felt as though Jenna was right next to me in the room actually talking to me and only me. I wanted to highlight a quote or cut out an inspirational note from each and every page of this book and stick them on my wall. Everything she had to say was so inspirational. But it was more than that: it was honest and real. She openly shared her experiences that led her to change her attitude or adjust something in her life. She didn’t write a book where she chose to falsely preach, and then leave you wondering whether or not she actually followed her own advice. It is clear that her inspiration comes from inside her and is something she has constantly worked on throughout her life. Her belief in herself makes me believe in her, and even more importantly, makes me believe in MYSELF. It is clear when reading this book that she wants to provide strength and support to the reader – that she believes in us, too! I fully plan on keeping this book with me at all times, long after I finish reading it – just to keep me strong and use as inspiration whenever I may need some. I would highly recommend this to anyone out there who needs a nudge to help find his/her inner strength, who enjoys watching Glee, who is a fan of Jenna Ushkowtiz, or for anyone who just wants to read something positive and inspiring.
