It's summertime...Let's climb into our hammocks and settle down for a good rock-and-read with America's favorite crackerbarrel philosopher (Uh-Oh, 1991, etc.). This time, Fulghum's typically brief, loosely connected essays kick off, after a note on the word ``maybe,'' with a meditation about the ``secret life'' each of us carries in our heads--not a new idea, certainly, but pondered here in the Seattle sage's usual easygoing manner (``I can fully relate to the occasional stories in the tabloids about multiple personalities. This is not news to me''): an intriguing notion to swing back and forth with. Fulghum moves on to family secrets, then to the secret of ironing a shirt, then to nicknames--and all this is getting just a little less charming, maybe (maybe not). The sun beating down on our hammocks is getting a little warmer, too, but we're still rocking back and forth, reading on....about how, as the butt of a practical joke, Fulghum was contacted by the Liberace Fan Club and other unusual organizations; how, each September, his neighborhood is invaded by ``soccer mania''; how he learned that urine is a wonder liquid (``You can tan leather with it...It will clean your hair'')....My, but that sun's hot and the air's lazy and hazy, as we swing back and forth. Enlightening & entertaining

I really liked Fulghum's casual, laid-back style of writing. "Maybe (Maybe Not)" was a very easy, fun, quick read. He's very optimistic and upbeat and tries to convey his outlook on life to his audience. He's got a lot of great thoughts from totally different areas of life. He only spends a couple of pages on one topic and moves on to something completely different. He's got a really good sense of humor and unlike most self-help type of books, he's not preachy in the least bit. Really enjoyable and highly recommended!

A Must for Fans of Fulghum!

Robert Fulghum is the master of telling complex stories in a simple, down-home manner. As such, I think I'd be paying him tribute most effectively if I kept this review simple. Suffice to say, if you've read and enjoyed other books by Mr. Fulghum, you'll definitely enjoy this one. By all means, read it. Read it more than once! You won't regret it!

Fulghum Makes Me Laugh, Think, Wonder

I've made no secret that I'm a fan of Robert Fulghum's writing style. He was a 'blogger' before blogging got big, in that he tells snippets of his life in short essay story-form, much like many bloggers do now, only he does it in such a compelling way, his is worthy of print publication. I have aspired in my life to write like him when I write personal essays--not so much to write LIKE him, per se, but rather, to write in a manner that makes people think, that reaches deeper than the surface of what the writing appears to be about. That's the thing that gets me about his writing: It's short and poignant, and those who don't want to seek deeper meaning can enjoy it, but at the same time, those who take the time to read deeper can get more out of it. It reaches all sorts of people on different levels. That's talent. I love his voice.

In this book, Maybe (Maybe Not), we get to laugh at some antics from his time on the church board and while working in a high school. The high school stories are some of my favorite. I loved the story about the Ape and the Naked Lady! I laughed through the whole thing. I loved so many of these stories in this book that while we were traveling in the car, I had to read them to my family out loud, and they were so engrossed in them that they wanted me to continue reading them when we arrived home.

The final story brought a tear to my eye while I was reading. I won't talk about it here as to not spoil it, but that story alone is worth reading.

Another thing I love about reading Mr. Fulghum is the fact he's a minister (or at least was, or maybe still is?)--but he's also 'real'. He's made some comments that make me laugh, such as one line in this book where he's talking about a bible story and says something along the lines of: The Lord doesn't come off looking too good in this one... Because sometimes I have thought that about bible stories too! It's nice to know a minister can feel that way just as much as a 'normal' person can!

There's also a great fishing tale that I giggled all the way through!

With these small essays, humorous anecdotes, poignant stories, and Mr. Fulghum's wit and insight, this book is worth picking up and reading. Because of the short essay style, it makes it an easy read in between waiting for doctor appointments, bathroom breaks, or any time you have a few minutes to take a break to read a short when you can't spend the time to read an entire book. If you haven't read Fulghum, it's time to pick one up and get started! His writing will leave you thinking!

About the Author

Don Hahn's name is synonymous with some of the most critically acclaimed animated motion pictures of this generation, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast, (the first animated film ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture (and before the Best Animated Film category was established). He was also the associate producer for Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the groundbreaking 1988 film that pioneered new techniques for combining animation and live-action. His other film credits include Fantasia/2000 and Atlantis. He is currently at work on his next Disney animated film.

Just like going on an animation studio tour

[[VIDEOID:33184041]]This book is like a pass that will give you access to a tour in an animation studio. The tour guide here is Don Hahn, who has been in the animation industry for years, directing some popular movies like The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, etc.

Don Hahn brings us down to the production floor, visiting every department, talking about the people and their role in movie production. You may have seen many making-of videos from DVDs but this book is the one stop source to the introduction to animation.

The book introduces the process of animation from idea creation to the ending post production work. It looks at three forms of animation that exist today and talks about how they are created. They are the computer-generated, 2D hand-drawn and stop-motion production.

Included concept art, sketches, set photos, sculptures, storyboards, 3D renders and some discarded ideas are included. This is like walking along studio corridors looking at all the art pinned on the boards.

The roles and responsibilities of every crew working on the film is explained. In a sort of way, it's also a guide to finding what kind of jobs are available in the animation industry. For the longest time, I've been trying to find out what a clean-up artist does and now I know, which is to "clean up" characters making sure they are consistent in style.

For people interested in the animation industry or how animated movies are made, this book provides a very good introductory background.

So that's how they do it!

I've long been a fan of animated movies, enjoying the story and the art but also being fascinated by what it must take to get one of these movies from concept to the screen.
The Alchemy of Animation does a great job of pulling back the curtain and explaining the process.

This book would be well worth the price for the plethora of pictures alone. It includes images from all stages of the process from initial concept through the final versions used in the movies. While that is a great reason to buy the book, it isn't the best part. The book is full of insight and information about animation. In particular I appreciated the focus on the story as the key element, regardless of the art form chosen and the way that the differences and similarities between traditional animation, stop motion and computer animation are highlighted.

If you are a fan of animation, or are looking for a great gift to give someone who is a fan I strongly recommend that you pick up a copy of this book.
