About the Author

Laura J. Gurak is professor and founding chair of the Department of Writing Studies at the University of Minnesota. She holds an M.S. in technical communication and a Ph.D. in communication and rhetoric from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is author of two books from Yale University Press (1997, 2001), the earlier of which was the first book-length work to study online communities and Internet-based social actions. Gurak is also co-editor of several edited collections and author on numerous conference presentations and papers; she is a recipient of the Society for Technical Communication’s Outstanding Article award. Gurak has authored and coauthored five textbooks in technical communication published by Pearson. She has worked as a technical writer and communications consultant for various companies and organizations.

John M. Lannon is Professor Emeritus and former Director of Writing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he developed the undergraduate major in professional writing and later co-developed the M.A. program in professional writing.
He has also taught at Cape Cod Community College, University of Idaho, Southern Vermont College, and University of Strasbourg.
He has authored and coauthored five major textbooks in business communication, rhetoric, and technical communication, book reviews, filmstrips, and environmental documents and instructional software. He is the recipient of an NDEA Fellowship and Fulbright Lectureship. He holds a B.S., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His initial training and work was in biomedical science and technology with the USAF. He has served as a communications consultant for various companies and government institutions. He worked seven years in medical laboratories.

Don't buy the MyTechCommLab

The book is fine. However, purchased the book combo which provided a code for the MyTechCommLab website which was required for my class. However, the code didn't work. Contacted Pearson for assistance and was told there was nothing they could do because I purchased the product from Amazon and not from the them or the university bookstore. That being said, I contacted Amazon. Amazon kindly sent me another book with a new MyTechCommLab code. Guess what? That one didn't work either. Stick a fork in me, I am done!

It may not be necessary

I was required to have this book for my ENG-131 technical report writing class. During the class, I've never used it because the subjects were about things that I could access online. I'm pretty sure it's a good book but make sure your instructor heavily relies on it before purchasing it!

I used this book for Technical Writing class. It was required but, this was a good buy. It fit the bill just right and buying a used book that Amazon will buy back was a good choice for me. I will not need to keep this book on my shelf but, did really need it for my class.

But since Hinds already performed the same feat quite admirably with Beowulf (Candlewick, 2007) he has proven himself more than capable of the task. To sum up the classic story: Odysseus tries to get home after the Trojan War, but many obstacles are thrown in his way, and many people, creatures, and gods try to stop him. His men are loyal on the one hand, yet bad at following critical orders on the other, which results in even more delays. Meanwhile, his faithful wife Penelope waits for him while fending off scores of impatient suitors. Luckily for Odysseus, he does have a few supporters, including the goddess Athena. Hinds's beautiful watercolors skillfully capture the rosy-fingered dawn, the wine-dark sea, the land of the dead, and many other settings and characters that will inspire readers. This adaptation goes far above and beyond the “highlights” coverage that other versions such as Tim Mucci's The Odyssey (Sterling, 2010) provide. Sail once again on the "wine dark sea"

I have always enjoyed reading the classic books and other epics from the distant past, and the works of Homer are no exception. I've read both "The Odyssey" and "The Iliad" in various translations, both prose and poetry, and found them fascinating works of literature. When I saw that there was a graphic novel version of the "Odyssey" I just had to buy it, and I am very happy that I did.

The artwork is superb and the story line is essentially faithful to Homer, but put into words and phrases that all can understand. When I read the inside and back covers of this work I discovered that the publishers saw this as reading for teens and young adults. I'm far from those ages (at 64), but still have that fascination with a classic tale well told as is this one.

Its been many years since I've read the full story, but this book is quite an excellent refresher course in early Greek epic poetry. The artist takes no overt liberties with the tale; he treats it with respect and that respect comes through on every page. I fully intend to present this book to my 14 � year old granddaughter for her to read and enjoy, for she has inherited both her grandfather's and father's love of reading. I sincerely hope she enjoys it as much as I have.

Even ancient civilizations had Super Heroes

I swear by Zeus' beard, if old Homer had hired a good illustrator, he'd probably still be on the NYTimes Best Sellers List.

A young friend requested this. I'm proud of her for starting her summer reading in the middle of June. The local stores are sold out, so students (or their helicopter parents) seem to be behaving very responsibly. No Kindle version, so I bought the paperback for $11.84+tax and two days later it's up to $12.18. Better grab one before you have to take out a second mortgage. They seem to be flying off the shelves and you know what that does to prices.

I was inclined to take a lofty attitude toward the presentation of an ancient masterpiece in modern prose and "graphic novel" (i.e. more pictures than text) style. When I was in school, we studied translations of the original version with maybe a picture or two thrown in. Must we "dumb-down" EVERYTHING?

However, I started reading it and kept on until I finished several hours later and I'm impressed. The writing is formal enough to give a flavor of by-gone times (at no point does Zeus say "Yo, Mama!" to Hera) but simple enough to be understood by a student who hasn't read widely, which is most of them. The reader will emerge with some knowledge of Ancient Greece and become familiar with the plot and characters in this timeless story of tragedy and strength.

The illustrations are fabulous. Everyone has weirdly long fingers. Zeus' tunic is barely long enough to meet decency laws. Hera has a formidable nose and chin, but her figure is darned good for a gal with grown kids. The mortals are wrestling and throwing javelins - probably getting ready to compete in the original Olympics. It would be historically accurate to show them naked, but maybe too racy for school reading. I LOVE the pissed-off guy who's cracking his knuckles. They're always either at war or getting ready to go to war or talking about who came home from the last war and who didn't. Things don't change much, do they?

If I were the author, I would have a brief introduction setting the stage and listing the major players and I would have footnotes explaining a few of the stranger words. Who knows what "hecatombs" are? Even I found the first few pages confusing and I know the story. I think Zeus' daughter who prodded him into helping Odysseus should be identified. And I think I would have drawn that picture to make it clear that the Big Man is drinking wine from a small cup instead of polishing off an ice cream cone.

But these are quibbles and I enjoyed it enormously. The author's love of ancient Greek civilization and mythology shines through and he sweeps the reader along with his enthusiasm. It's a fine way to learn a classic tale that's frequently referenced in modern literature. It will be interesting to see if the student's opinions jive with mine.

Good Guide to Business Savvy

I already have the book, and was impressed with the down to earth guidance. Burkett always references the Word of God accurately. I bought the tapes because I can listen to them while driving, making my car a "university on wheels." Listening to Larry's admonitions is different from reading it. Processing it from 2 different view points is so helpful. I definitely give it a thumb's up for someone wanting to build a business that will last for the long haul. Just like gravity works whether we want it to or not, the principles set up by our Creator (like gravity) also work when they are followed. Burkett guides the listener through every facet of a business and its operations. It's up to each of us to make the choices that will propel us forward successfully, and the author lays those choices visible in a straight forward, down to earth manner. The rest is up to us to follow through.

It's like being hit over the head with a brick.

I used this book as a teaching tool for my Business Ministry Class. Each week we would go through a chapter and discuss how it applies to our everyday business decisions. I found myself constantly be challenged by what I thought was right vs what God wants us to do. I did not agree with everything the author stated, but darn near most of it. As one of our members said, "Before we went over the lesson I would have made decisions I would have regretted. Now the decisions I make reflect closer to what God wants."

I highly recommend not only reading the book, but writing down your thoughts about each chapter and how you either need to make changes or keep on the path your on.

Robert Flanagan is the son of a WWI Marine combat vet who fought at Belleau Wood, Ch�teau-Thierry and Soissons. Born in Toledo, Ohio, he worked as a dishwasher, night watchman and janitor there, served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, and graduated from the Universities of Toledo and Chicago. He is a produced playwright, poet, as well as the author of four books of fiction. A lifelong boxing fan, he earned his detached retinas sparring in local gyms. His forthcoming novel Champions is set in Toledo’s hard luck world of boxers and comics. He taught at Ohio Wesleyan University and lives with wife Katie in Delaware, Ohio.

A clear and truthful story of boot camp life in the Corps.

As a former Marine, this story takes me back to the day when I first landed at Parris Island for basic training over twenty years ago. A truthful, yet entertaining story.

Quite arresting reading

A powerful read. I have no experience with the marines and found this slice of life view interesting. It is compelling aside from the setting however with characters that stick with you long after the last page is turned. How surprising that this is out of print, it sold over a half million copies or more. I guess it needed Oprah's recommendation to stay in print, what a shame.

I read this book several years ago prior to my shipping out to Parris Island for boot camp. I thought I could use some insight into the mystique of U.S.M.C. training. How silly of me. The only "true" way to learn of this training is to experience it first hand. I had read some of the book before arriving at Parris Island, but sadly I misplaced my copy--never to be found again. The experiences I shared with my platoon mates were much more colorful than that of the book, but the book wasn't far from the mark.

About the Author

David Groenfeldt is the founder and Director of the Water-Culture Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Anthropology, University of New Mexico, USA. He has previously worked on irrigation research at the International Water Management Institute (Sri Lanka), the design and management of irrigation projects for the World Bank, and rural development consulting for various international agencies. More recently, he directed a watershed NGO in New Mexico, and in 2010 founded the Water-Culture Institute to address the underlying causes of unsustainable water management: our own values and ethics.

Water Ethics is a lucid and informative introduction to one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time: the ethics of sustainable water for ourselves and future generations across the globe. Groenfeldt’s thorough research is presented with clarity and enlivened with illustrative stories from his life-long work as an anthropologist in water management. The book introduces the historical background of current policies, such as the principle of “prior appropriation” in the American West, and argues for how and why we need a reformulated water ethics and set of laws. Chapters address the rights of water use in relation to dams and rivers, agriculture (which accounts, astonishingly, for more than two-thirds of the earth’s fresh-water use), industry, and cities. Chapters also take up questions of governance and indigenous rights. The book concludes with a call for a “new water ethic.” Water Ethics is required reading for anyone who cares about one of the world’s most important—and endangered—resources. After reading this book, the idea of “wasting water” will never be the same. SS

Stimulates new ideas for water policy

Water Ethics takes seriously the New Mexican saying that "agua es vida." Drawing from his extensive experience in several countries with the many ways and many places that water and humans deal with each other, Groenfeldt describes numerous examples that compare and contrast uses of water--by business, by cities, by farmers, by indigenous people, by governments, etc--and then shows the variety of values that can be in play within each of those categories--economic, environmental, cultural, social, health, recreational, etc. The book demonstrates how comparison can lead to innovation. After the exploration of a variety of uses and users in different locations, a reader sees new ways of thinking previously unimagined. In this time of global water crises, new ideas that might improve both agua and vida are worth their weight in gold.

About the Author

Lynn Cannon, M.Ed., is a special education coordinator at the Ivymount School. She is responsible for helping to develop and oversee the social learning and academic curriculum for the lower and middle school students at Ivymount School. Ms. Cannon is the director of Take2 Summer Camp, a program designed to develop interaction skills and social thinking in children ages 8–12. Prior to her work at Ivymount School Lynn was a classroom teacher at the Lab School of Washington, in Washington DC. Ms. Cannon has been a major contributor to the development of the intervention. She has led all of the data collection, the implementation of the intervention and the training of the teachers in the pilot feasibility and development trial.

Lauren Kenworthy is the Director of the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders at Children's National Medical Center and is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Neurology, The George Washington University Medical School. She has specialized in the neuropsychological assessment of children with social learning disorders and executive dysfunction for over 15 years. In addition, Dr. Kenworthy has published over 20 peer reviewed papers investigating autism and executive function, as well as developing the most widely used assessment tool in the field, the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF; Gioia, Isquith, Guy, & Kenworthy, 2000).

For over 10 years, Katie C. Alexander has dedicated her work to serving individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), their families, and the professionals who support them. Katie is an occupational therapist who has conducted research on cognitive behavioral intervention for adolescents with Asperger's Disorder and has provided trainings and presentations both nationally and at the state level. Recently, Katie served as the founding program director for the Model Asperger Program at Ivymount School (MAP), where she led the development and implementation of a model, evidence-based educational programming, including intervention targeting social competency, positive behavior supports, and executive function. Katie has since authored two textbook chapters and continues to develop programming for individuals with ASD and participate in the research collaboration between the Ivymount School and Children's National Medical Center.

Monica Adler Werner, M.S., is the Director of the Model Asperger Program (MAP) at the Ivymount School. In that capacity she has spearheaded the development of a social learning curriculum that emphasizes problem solving, self advocacy and self regulation. Ms Werner has been a major contributor to the development of the intervention. In addition, she is a co-founder of Take2 Summer Camp, a program designed to develop social thinking, problem solving and skills. She also serves as an ad hoc public reviewer of NIMH autism grants.

Dr. Laura Anthony is a clinical and developmental psychologist at the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders at Children's National Medical Center and an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Pediatrics, Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) at the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences (GWU). She leads the intervention program at the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders, an active interdisciplinary evaluation, treatment, research and training clinic. Dr. Anthony has expertise in developing clinical interventions and over 20 years of extensive experience in studying and treating behavioral rigidities (executive dysfunction) and stereotyped behaviors in children with developmental disorders. In addition, she and Dr. Kenworthy were awarded an ASD supplement to CNMC's Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disorders program to provide interdisciplinary training in the evaluation, treatment and research with children with ASD.

I don't like this for home use. I have an autistic son and this is more like a textbook to be used in a classroom. I see little use for it at the home. It should be specified that this is a classroom teaching aid.

"Ellery is like some kind of hot bed for gay men....."

The Ellery Mountain series consistently delivers, each book emotional and heartwarming. I have enjoyed each of the pairings and loved all the characters, from the very first book to this, the seventh in the series.

This is the story of Mikey, now all grown up, a successful model who no longer lives in Ellery, instead Michael (as he is now called) travels the world modelling for designer labels, only returning to town infrequently. He has found success, fame and fortune but he is still haunted by the attack on his life six years before.

Recent events have further shaken Michael and he finds himself with some choices to make. His contract is up for renewal and he needs to decide what his future holds - more modelling or a return to study? He is also running from Alex, his agent and the man he had started to fall in love with. Michael returns to his Nan and friends in Ellery while he makes some decisions. Luckily Alex is a determined man and isn't going to give up on Michael and visiting his friend Jason (the actor and old client) gives him reason to stay in Ellery.

I must admit that I found Michael's response to Alex's actions in Paris frustrating - obviously he was still severely traumatised by his original attack, otherwise he was totally overreacting - one of those situation's where you just want to shake the character and make them listen to what the other character has to say!

This book gives opportunity for the men of Ellery to help Mikey overcome his fears and put his past behind him. It is a story of friendship and support and healing. There are some warm and emotional moments, some romantic moments (one of the couples has some big news) and happy endings all round.

Most amusing....picturing two grown men with overnight bags, two wheeled cases and a dog, traveling for hours in a Porsche - the boot (trunk) and interior space must be a lot bigger than I remember!

Two beautiful men with a barrier between them

Michael comes home to Ellery to face his past, only his present keeps intruding in the form of his agent Alex Casey, who won’t take no for an answer.
In this installment of Ellery Mountain we meet a character we have encountered before, just more grown up and successful. Mikey is a young man who lived with his Nan when we met him before, we knew he had been attacked, beaten, stabbed and doused in petrol (gas) and left for dead (although not set alight). Now we meet him again as a very successful male model who has again been the recipient of violence that has brought up the earlier attack. He is off kilter and running - but he can't run far enough to get away from his agent Alex.
Alex loves Michael, he is heartbroken that by trying to protect Michael he put him in harms way. He lied by failing to tell Michael of the threat he is seen as betraying Michael's trust and has lost their budding relationship and their professional contract.
How can Alex fix this when Michael has told him to keep away and they are done?
Meanwhile Michael is having some flashbacks and memories about the attack. It was always assumed someone passing through attacked him in this close-knit community but he remember something that leads to a local.
This is a nice wee read, nothing earth shattering and not my favourite in the series. Michael is a bit annoying because he can't see that although Alex made a mistake, and admits it,they still love each other and there was no ill intent. Good book for a weekend.

Good finale to the series

The time has finally come where we get Michael’s story in The Agent and The Model by RJ Scott. We met him early on as a young teen in Ellery who was brutally attacked. He left town and has become a famous model in New York. Six years later, he’s coming back to Ellery to visit his Nan and somehow his agent Alex has decided to tag along. Alex is actually riding with Michael to see his close friend Jason and attend a big party, but instead of driving alone he manages to get Michael to drive him. It’s clear they had some kind of relationship in the past, but they are not on good terms. You can sense Alex is trying to break the ice but Michael is truly angry and clearly hurt.

At first I wasn’t sure about Alex but I think the way he treats his dog makes me think he has to be a good guy. Either way Michael wants nothing to do with him and is downright nasty. As Michael tries to come to terms with his past attack, the walls he built to protect his heart from Alex and starting to crumble. There are a lot of hints early on something bad happened but it takes many pages in the book before we learn what. I think it was almost too many pages because I felt like I was in the dark about something very important to the characters that seriously affected their relationship.

I enjoyed having all of the past characters in the story and all being together for Jason and Kieran’s party. Watching Avery and Travis warn Alex about hurting Michael was the best. Overall the story wasn’t as impactful as I was hoping; it just felt a bit rushed. Michael’s attack is solved, but was a bit anticlimactic. Michael and Alex’s relationship wraps up nicely but the story just felt incomplete especially since it is the last book of the series. It is definitely a must read for fans of the Ellery Mountain series. I’m sad to see the series come to an end.
