About the Author
Jim Hayes is a co-founder and President of The Fiber Optic Association, Inc., the professional society of fiber optics. He is also a partner in VDV Works, a company that provides tech support to the voice-data-video industry and training and technical content for instructors and schools and technical consulting in communications. Originally educated as a physicist and astronomer at Vanderbilt University and The University of California at Santa Cruz, Jim has been involved with the electronics, communications and instrumentation industry since 1968. Since 1980, he has been involved with fiber optics and communications. Jim was founder and President of Fotec, Inc., the Boston-based fiber optic test equipment company which was sold to Fluke Networks in 2001. While at Fotec, he started the Fiber U and Cable U training conferences. Jim is a frequent lecturer on communications, writes monthly columns for Electrical Contractor and TED (The Electrical Distributor,) is the author of three books, The FOA Reference Guide to Fiber Optics, The Fiber Optic Technicians Manual and Data, Voice and Video Cabling as well as numerous articles on fiber optics and cabling. His cabling curriculum is used by several hundred schools worldwide. In 2003, Jim was selected as one of the "luminaries" of the fiber optic industry by FPN magazine. In 2007, he was chosen one of the Top Ten Pioneers in fiber to the premises by Broadband Properties magazine.

I'm not finished with this book yet, but it is very good and pleasant to read and with information enough to clarify concerns and provide technicians with required knowledge to understand fiber optics installations, workings and how to troubleshoot and find the root of problems. I certainly recommend this excellent reading to all professionals in the fiber optic area.

The FOA Guide

I'm using this book right now for the fall semester. So far the book is good teaching me the basics of fiber optics. At the end of each chapter there are quizzes. There is no answers at the back because the answers are there when you read it. The only thing I didn't know about is you can view this book online for free. It's pretty much the same thing and they added more stuff about fiber optics (the more detailed stuff and how it works).
