Using a thematic approach, this concise survey explores the many and varied threads of American history-social, intellectual, cultural, political, diplomatic, economic, and military-from the arrival of the first native American inhabitants thousand of years ago throught the crisis following the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, 2001.

Irwin Unger,a Pulitzer Prize winning author, wrote this book after discovering from his own experiences teaching American History at the University of California at Davis and at NYU, that a thematic approach was much more interesting to students thana purely descriptive one.

Elegant, insightful, and in dire need of updating
By Keith Wheelock
Despite its shortcomings, I have used Professor Unger's American history textbook since 1993. Pulitzer-Prize-winning Unger is a first-class historian who writes with keen insight. His first edition of THESE UNITED STATES, when published in 1978, reflected up-to-date scholarship. Unfortunately, very little of this initial edition have been revised subsequently to reflect the scholarship of the past 30 years. Indeed, some significant typographical and graphic errors that I found in his 1992 edition went uncorrected for several more editions.
I still use as my professor's copy Unger's 1995 edition. It has excellent sidebar biographic profiles, written by his scholar wife, capsule summaries of key events, and helpful graphs and graphics. Some years later the publisher issued the 'concise edition,' which cut out much of this supplementary material, some of which can be purchased separately. Initially, this was intended to make this textbook 'more affordable.' Since then, the price has been raised significantly.
I still use Unger's textbook because of the cohesive personal grasp presented by a single first-class historian. This differs from the committee-writing often evidenced in other texts. I find some of his chapters excellent. Others suffer from Unger's failure to reflect modern scholarship. His chapter on Truman and Eisenhower suffer both from his strong liberal bias and his omission of the more recent historical scholarship that has catapulted both Harry and Ike significantly up the rankings by American historians.
Virtually no scholarship since the late 1970s has been incorporated into Unger's early chapters. While his bibliography remains almost unchanged since the 1978 edition, he has added some website references in recent editions. Unger has added additional chapters to incorporate the presidencies of Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and the two Bushes. These lack the conciseness of his earlier chapters. Moreover, his liberal bias is reflected in his assessment of the Reagan years.
Professor Unger has retired. I believe that this 4th concise edition is his last. I would hope that he could find a worthy successor who could maintain the core structure of Unger's book, while updating major sections to reflect modern-day scholarship. For example, in my opinion he does Rockefeller an injustice in describing him, with Jay Gould, as a "spoiler.'
I still use Unger's text. In part I delight in his eloquent cohesiveness. I also find it instructive to illustrate to my students how historical interpretations change over the decades and why it is important for a writer to stay abreast of these developments.

Egad, Nightmare Fodder
By The Lizard King
Oh boy. Another book I was coerced into getting for classes, but I regret this one much more than the others. Though the book could use a better cover, it's really in need of an emergency editing. I found myself underlining horrendously incorrect sentences and misspellings while I trudged through the prose. I found it impossible to accept this book as fact with such simple errors littering the text. I really wonder if I somehow managed to get a first draft of the book with regular binding. I read the book for as long as I could stand. Maybe someday I'll flip through and see what I missed.

One of my favorite history books
By Katherine T.
The only history book in college I actually liked. I love all history but this book was such a cute size and came in perfect condition. So much easier to read than most textbooks because of the concise edition.
